    Pros

    Cons

Beloved CEO Jim Meyers recently retired. It seems that "Animals come first" policy is going with him.

    Advice to Management

Show more appreciation and recognition, in the form of monetary gain, for loyalty and hard work

I worked at Petco full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It was great to work with animals and spend most of your day talking to people about animals. Helping people find the best products for their pets is very rewarding.

    Cons

The management is terrible and extremely constrained by corporate standards/policies. The training, while very in-depth, is also very rigorous and takes several hours. The stores are consistently understaffed, underbudgeted, and it is frustrating to try to help customers on the sales floor when youre stuck on a register and unable to walk away - even if no customers are checking out.

    Advice to Management

Allow managers to be more free to spend time on the sales floor so the regular staff can man registers and departments. Managers should be selling and interacting with customers - not hiding in the back stocking shelves all day.

I worked at Petco full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Bring your pet to work, casual dress and nice building.

    Cons

Earlier this year cut 180 positions at their headquarters and talk of more to come. People that are left are doing the work of several people to compensate. Employees are stressed and unhappy. A lot of instability. Management keeps changing direction. Management (Officers are paid well), everyone else not so much. CEO and Sr. Officers do not care about their employees.

    Advice to Management

Stop cutting positions and hiring ADDitional senior management. Think about cutting your salaries or bonuses first. Have more consideration and respect for the people that work for you. Very sad to see a company that was once great go downhill so quickly!

    Pros

Loved learning and educating guests on proper animal Care.

    Cons

Need competitive pay and hours to succeed

    Advice to Management

Put all animals first even if you have a preference of one type of animal over the other .. fur to reptile

I have been working at Petco full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Can't really think of any.

    Cons

Not enough staff to do anything properly. Animal care is almost impossible to do with only 2 or so employees. Not enough people to answer phones, ring the register clean, mop up animal pee, stock shelves and give customers the service they deserve while they are in the store. Pay sucks...raises above min. wage amount to pennies. Job just sucks in general. You can get the same pay flipping burgers or bagging groceries.

    Advice to Management

Get your head out of your butts and the office and see what you are doing to your employees. Less profit at the top and give some back to your work crew. More payroll hours and pay will equal happy and plentiful customers, otherwise you will fade into the sunset.

I have been working at Petco full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Competitive pay. Fairly relaxed dress code, so no out of pocket money for uniform required. Helping customers who genuinely appreciate your service.

    Cons

Management makes many decisions based on their emotions and favoritism is a constant issue. Little concern over illegal activity at store level (manager forcing employees to work off the clock).

    Advice to Management

Make choices that are for the betterment of the customers, your employees and the business. Your emotions or personal favorites should never be a factor. Use 97-99% of payroll regardless of further calls from district leadership to cut hours. Cutting beyond 97% is going to hurt you, your partners and your store when payroll expectations for the following year are rolled out.
