Great starter job, being a manager is not worth the pay.

Unrealistic task from corporate, not enough hours to run a store efficiently.
Will not exterminate roaches, making it an unsafe environment for employees.

    Pros

Discount on products is definitely nice. Especially if you have multiple pets. Also, free product from brand representatives when they come to visit!

    Cons

Honestly, this company has a horrible idea of how to run things. Animals come first- when it's most convenient. They expect unrealistic things, and it's very challenging to meet their expectations. The company was recently bought out, so they're putting the main focus on classes and services- things you can't buy on Amazon. It's become very cookie cutter, plastic corporation type.

    Pros

The customers were awesome. I liked helping the customers with finding the best products for there pets to have a healthy and good life. I enjoyed caring for the pets there.

    Cons

They take bad care of the animals there. Most of the cages are over stocked, the reptiles did not get taken care of good at all. Improper lighting and lack of calcium and vitamin supplements. The tropical reptiles did not have proper humidity levels and the tortoises did not get fresh greens like they should have. I tried all I can to provide the best care for the animals but management did not really listen when I had concerns.

    Advice to Management

Provide better care for the animals, there should not be 5 tortoises in a small glass cage at once. They need fresh greens and not the pellets that they always got. Dust the insects with calcium powder and change the UVB bulbs every 6 months.

I worked at Petco full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great interacting with animal lovers, some amazing coworkers, got to see and work with some very unique animals, some very involved managers

    Cons

Benefits were overpriced, some managers were very involved with the store, the GM was very out of touch with the employees and animals

    Advice to Management

Recognize that your employees are not machines, they cannot be scheduled for the busiest hours, given countless tasks, and complete them. Schedule the employees with the most tasks during the quieter hours. Recognize that animal health and customers are prioritized over appearance.

    Pros

    Love of animals
Knowledge is really useful and you learn a lot!
Get to help people and animals
    Growth is available
Decent pay for first starting a job

    Cons

Not given enough time or training to really take care of the animals. Expected to do EVERYTHING with no support and then get yelled at for not doing your job. Up into management pay sucks. People are very bad about throwing you under the buss and upper management doesn't praise hard work and like to make lots of hard work for no reason.

    Advice to Management

Calm down on the rules and regulations listen to your managers. You forget or maybe never have worked in the trenches.

    Pros

Meet very cool people, learn a ton about pet health, engaging work

    Cons

If you're at a "low client base" salon or a new salon, It is very very hard to commission out for the week. Your hourly wage is very low. There are a ton of problems getting the correct commission. You must be very diligent bookkeeper. Do not count on management to catch mistakes
