I worked at Peterbilt Motors Company full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

They don't force you to do overtime. You get Saturdays and Sundays off which was nice since i had younger Kids. The pay was very nice for easy work. Benefits were great. Very Friendly people to work with.

    Cons

Sometimes hard to keep up with the production demands.

I have been working at Peterbilt Motors Company full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Iconic brand, great products, mostly good people that have pride in their work and the end product.
The parent company PACCAR offers a strong benefit package including pension, which is very rare.

The recent vacation policy improvements are are good start.

FINALLY starting to see progress in workplace environment. Don't stop, keep it up!

Flex schedule offered is good for working parents.

Opportunities exist to gain experience in various other areas within PACCAR.

    Cons

The workload disparity is huge and quite evident between sustaining engineering and new programs. Paccar seeme to run extremely understaffed for new projects and programs which are then coupled with unrealistic timelines and savings expectations set by management.

Most of the interesting engineering work done at the technical center or by suppliers. Design engineers are constantly burdened with work that in all reality should be handled by other departments that they work alongside.

As an engineer you can expect to spend more time in Excel and creating PowerPoint presentations than doing real engineering work. There are numerous forms of documentation, many of which are redundant. Six Sigma tools and processes are used improperly, primarily for the purpose of reporting misleading savings through the organization to shareholders.

The numerous buisness systems are quite limited, often redundant and VERY antiquated, improved productivity and product quality would be obtained with improvements here.

Even with the recent attempts to improve the office area, a lot of work is still needed to bring this place up to par based on competition in DFW.

Some mid-level managers are out of touch with 3D modeling and tend to hesitate to learn newer systems.

    Advice to Management

Salaries are in need of adjustment for the good economy, booming industry, and the recent 14% corporate tax cut. This would explain why some are leaving and many of these vacant positions are being turned down by outside candidates.

Focus more attention to your lower level employees and perform more thorough evaluations with your engineering supervisors, as they can make or break the work life and overall experience at Peterbilt for current and incoming employees.

Consider conducting 360 surveys and take the subordinates feedback of their managers seriously, they may have some things to share that you need to know.

Continue to fund office improvements and look for opportunities to engage employees to build the team and boost moral.

I have been working at Peterbilt Motors Company (Less than a year)

    Pros

When you do have work, it's very interesting work especially if you want to know the ins and outs of the automotive industry.

    Cons

I was left to dry with days on end with no work to do.

    Advice to Management

Maybe hire less interns, so that there is a larger amount of work for each intern to do.

I have been working at Peterbilt Motors Company full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good people to work with. Also given regular and consistent hours. The work as far as checking in parts an equipment is easy to learn an do.

    Cons

Must be outside in the elements on a regular basis. It's a very labor demanding job. In other words you must be used to hard labor an a hot sun.

    Advice to Management

Give more opportunities to younger employees. I feel that if they gave an incentive and or goal to reach for they're younger employees they'd be given a better opportunity to grow as a company .

I have been working at Peterbilt Motors Company full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Work/Life balance is great for most. Great people to work with. Opportunities for travel. Denton has improved a lot since I started.

    Cons

Below-average pay, with infrequent promotions/raises. Two big layoffs in the last decade. More of the interesting engineering work takes place at the Technical Center.

    Advice to Management

I certainly appreciate the effort to improve things with added vacation and flex time, keep at it! Lots of experts retiring soon and no incentive for younger employees to fill their shoes, maybe something to consider. Less emphasis on cost savings, more emphasis on quality improvement. Take notice of your hard workers and reward their efforts, recognition can be very motivating.
