    Great community pharmacy environment

    Jan 17, 2022 - Staff Pharmacist

    Pros

versus other retail pharmacy chains, Pharmaca feels like working in a spa. They staff estheticians and herbalists in their front store to help customers find and choose front store products. Pharmacy only has to get involved when a customer asks about OTC drugs. Front store is adequately staffed so no losing techs to covering the register, and nobody interrupting your focus to ask where the candy aisle is. Corporate had very reasonable requirements of pharmacy, and there were not a ton of people in the management chain with their bonuses tied to you hitting impossible metrics. Higher ups actually seem to care about their boots on the ground and don't treat you like a machine.

    Cons

Its still community pharmacy. You still get unreasonable patients, people who have no idea what pharmacy does, you still have to deal with doctors offices and insurances. Patients here tend to be slightly more entitled and "superior," although the customer base is much more pleasant on average than your normal big box. Also, Pharmaca provides them with a lot less to be med about, so these interactions are rarer but the do still happen. Like all successful pharmacy chains, there's a chance they take a huge cash out from one of the big boxes at some point. So you run the risk of winding up working for WAGs or CVS anyways (see: Target pharmacy). If they ever do decide to go for a buyout they are probably going to pump up their metrics to maximize their valuation, so in the few years before that buyout would hypothetically occur, you'd probably be getting hassled on metrics and getting hours cut.

    Best Company I've Worked For

Oct 12, 2021 - Naturopathic Doctor in Longmont, CO

    Pros

I've worked a lot of retail. I graduated from naturopathic school one year ago, and before that I've pretty much only done retail. The Boulder, CO Pharmaca, in the Ideal Market shopping center, has gone above and beyond any retail job I've had. They express constant appreciation to all their employees and create a really enjoyable work environment. They know retail can be tedious, so they make it all the better with offering generous breaks, occasional free snacks or drinks from the store, and even once bought us all food from Ideal Market next door. I've only worked there 1.5 months but I'm sure they do things like that more often. Oh, you also get a membership to Expert Voice, which is a discount site for everything from camping gear to supplements. As a new doc, I've been learning a ton about supplement options, more than I would in private practice. I accepted a job in a clinic and felt so bad telling them I'm leaving. They're short staffed because of the nature of the country in the midst of the pandemic. The managers work so hard covering shifts for everyone, they really honor your requests for time off to enjoy life and only ask you cover when you can. If you're considering working here, please do, they need good employees (that will stick around longer than I am!) and they are a great place to work. I can't speak for other locations, only 2700 Broadway.

    Cons

Low pay for a practitioner, and it's retail, nothing glamorous about it.

    Great place to work

Aug 23, 2020 - Lead Practitioner in Berkeley, CA

    Pros

Generally a good work culture with a positive mission. For newly beginning or seasoned health professionals there are a lot of great learning opportunities. Lots of product samples to try which helps you speak about the products directly to customers. For a retail store, the compensation is pretty good in comparison to other places- but be sure advocate for your best wage. They do want all the knowledge you will bring.

    Cons

I think they are not offering insurance to PT employees much anymore.

    Pros

Staff is great, so knowledgeable and warm. Always enjoy my shifts and the location is one to beat (La Jolla is beautiful). Shifts are flexible, staff is such a pleasure to work with, the clientele is...interesting.. eccentric for sure. Honestly always go home in a good mood.

    Cons

Parking sucks but I️ learned to enjoy the walk. Store is getting a little shabby but that’s not hindering my performance in any way, it would just be nice to update some of the furniture and whatnot.
