I have been working at Pharmacyclics full-time

    Pros

Company overall has good pay and benefits structure including bonus; Ibrutinib is a very good drug with minimal side effects and has very good results in blood cancers

    Cons

ClinOps (Clinical Operations) is a crucial department in the company. Not too long ago, It had a very strong leader who had a vision , brought rigor to the projects and also in turn to the whole company. Unfortunately that leadership is lacking now. The current leader doesn't have any vision and can not put company and employees objectives ahead compared to personal gains??
This is really comical that such a high leader who is managing almost ~ 200 people has time to interview a CTA level candidate. Sincerely I wish the department is in good hands than what it is now, which would reach out to higher management and fight for more projects to be brought in Pharmacyclics campus.

    Advice to Management

Company specially the ClinOps needs a leadership which has reverie, innovation and which can motivate employees.

    President
    Excellent relationship with my Manager
    Good work-life balance
    Opportunity to work cross functionally

    Cons

Culture still needed a lot of care and attention
Some of the holdovers were like cancer cells - toxic
Upper management in my area full of inertia - not willing to make decisions

    Advice to Management

Keep nurturing a more positive culture
Ruthlessly make sure the holdovers really want to be there

I have been working at Pharmacyclics part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Drug is giving people the magic of normal and we helped make that happen. Campus is expanding with improvements to cafeteria. Hey, great breakfasts at the quarterly Town Halls and free oatmeal every day! My department is awesome - dedicated coworkers, leadership listens, friendly and fun

    Cons

Poor managers do not seem to suffer any repercussions. Some of them use HR as a way to point the finger at another function to avoid taking responsibility for poor performance. Due to turnover, lots of new employees in operations that have not had sufficient training to understand processes (yes, we do have them).

    Advice to Management

Please hold management in those other departments you've read about (yes it is true) accountable for the Ways We Work so we can improve our culture and attract highly qualified candidates

I worked at Pharmacyclics as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

The legal transactions team is generally well run. The 3 Attorney Managers are professional, amiable, and make themselves available if you need guidance or questions. It has a busy workload. You get your feet wet relatively quickly. All of the team's Associates are friendly, helpful and collaborative, rather than cut throat and competitive.

    Cons

Although change is the norm in the corporate world, processes here are always changing, people are not always on the same page about what to do and how to get things done, including the business units. Inter-departmental communication is very poor on this front. The group is under resourced. Last and certainly not least, the pay is very poor for both employees and the contract attorneys. That, along with the aforementioned issues have led to high turnover.

    Advice to Management

Faciliate better interdepartmental rollout of process changes. Pay your legal staff competitive wages. This is the SF Bay Area for God's sake, not Chicago (AbbVie HQ).

I worked at Pharmacyclics (More than a year)

    Pros

Blockbuster drug for CLL and MCL. Game changer drug for the treatment of hematological malignancies. Great stock price increase and eventual drug approved and company acquisition with Abbvie.

    Cons

Extremely political environment very toxic. Politics stems from the leadership team down. Project workload is never ending and management expectation is to work 24/7.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the science and leave the politics behind.

    Pros

Amazing drug with committed talent base.

    Cons

Drive to deliver can create a culture that looses sight of how to inspire staff in a positive, productive way. All good intentions that can get lost in translation.

    Advice to Management

    Stay the course.

    Pros

There are a lot of great people that work here, and there are a lot of opportunities to learn, and branch out. There are also a lot of great products in the pipeline.

    Cons

Some of the pros will slowly be going away as Pharmacyclics transitions from being a startup to a much larger company. Also, the compensation packages, raises, and promotions are getting worse as is expected with this transition.

    Pros

Lot's of change happening since Abbvie transition. Sr. Leadership is committed to turn culture around. Product still attracts people and work opportunities.

    Cons

Lot's of change happening....it's a double edged sword. Lot's of good people have moved on, as expected, post option vesting period. More to come probably after bonus pay out. Lingering fear that Abbvie will just swallow PCYC. Tough to understand what success looks like for the company and employees.
