    I worked at Phelps Dunbar

    Pros

Phelps is an amazing opportunity for a paralegal to do substantive work with a top National law firm. Billables are in line with most major law firms. Knowledgeable and highly respected attorneys. The firm recognizes the value of paralegal support as a vital component of its business and treats them accordingly as members of the professional staff. Management is generally fair and humane. Good employees are... recognized and efforts to retain them are made in its daily culture. As a paralegal, you are given the latitude to do your job as the professional you are, without hand-holding, micro-management, etc. Decent benefits. Nice 401(k) with vesting. Firm gatherings and parties are terrific, with no expense spared to ensure that employees and their families have a good time. Good people that becomes like a second family. Great place to work.

    Cons

You have to pay for your own parking, which is a little expensive. Paralegals are "hourly employees," and so overtime is discouraged unless it is approved in advance. This inhibits one's ability to own a case and work it the way it should be worked.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the great work!

I have been working at Phelps Dunbar full-time

    Pros

The Pros of working at Phelps would include the pleasant environment. Pretty much everyone from partners to staff are nice.

    Cons

Some of the challenges of working at Phelps is knowing that the work you do from the day you start is pretty much what you'll be doing if you stay there for 30 years. There is no chance to advance.

    Advice to Management

Offer those few positions that open up to your staff that is currently there before hiring from outside.

I have been working at Phelps Dunbar full-time

    Pros

Decent benefits, PTO, flexibility, hardworking support staff

    Cons

Constantly losing quality staff and attorneys due to inability to focus on retention, inconsistent support of various practice groups, cold and pretentious environment, handful of verbally abusive partners, pay is mediocre

    Advice to Management

Continually cutting support staff is killing morale, casual Fridays (real ones, not just it's okay to not wear a tie), encourage better relationships between staff and attorneys, show some recognition to associates and support staff before they leave

I worked at Phelps Dunbar full-time

    Pros

Excellent attorneys -- many who really enjoy what they do.

    Cons

Partners compete with each other for business. Backstabbing among partners. Some, although not all, partners believe that practicing law and having a family are incompatible. Unfortunately, upper level management doesn't attempt to address issue.

    Advice to Management

Address that great attorneys can still be parents and offer flexibility.
