    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Phenomenex full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Some of the managers are nice and helpful
    - Some of the employees are also nice and helpful
    - Great place to gain experience right out of college

    Cons

    - The compensation is absolutely horrible, and not competitive in the industry (Do your research before committing)
    - It's like high school, there's lots of back stabbing and gossip - very toxic environment
    - Largely composed of recent college graduates, or people who are too comfortable to leave
    - CEO doesn't care about the employees, therefore retention is horrible. They would rather have people quit then give them a raise. This is why when people get advanced degrees or gain some experience they leave the company.
    - Lots of turn over in all departments, which makes getting you job done difficult. There's always someone new who doesn't know what they are doing.
    - Many of the people in management position aren't qualified. They have either been there forever, or are related to the CEO.
    - The benefits are a joke when compared to other companies.
    - Hardly any room for growth and career advancement.
    - The CEO doesn't show his face, unless it's to yell about something he isn't happy with.

    Advice to Management

    - Provide employees with career paths and growth opportunities
    - Provide better pay and fair, accurate and non-manipulative compensation packages
    - work on employee retention
    - Bring back the culture, which is largely gone
    - Stop being so passive, and stop all the drama and gossip
    - Place qualified people in management positions
    - Implement a feedback system and actually listen to employees to improve the company
    - Make it so people want to come to work in the morning

I have been working at Phenomenex full-time

    Pros

    Beautiful Environment.
    Sales Team has fun activities.
Most people in sales are around the same age (20's to young 30's).
Stepping stone to qualify yourself into sales as a career.

    Cons

Pay is below average. Do not expect to be impressed.
Videos on Phenomenex website is misleading - the CEO doesn't show his face to the sales team unless it is to humiliate them for not making him enough money.
Sales team gossips more than teenage girls.
Sales territory can determine how much money you make from pushes and sales goals. No matter how hard you try to push the product, some territories have more opportunity than others.
If you exceed your yearly sales goal, you are expected to exceed even further the following year. There is a threshold that a sales territory reaches due to budget, needs, companies staying in business, etc. Sales is not linear, but upper management goals you as if it were.
Upper management guilt people to come in on weekends or stay late if they are to be seen as "committed to their job."
Philanthropy Work seems more like tax write offs than anything else.

    Advice to Management

Most people quit after 2-3 years because they know they are worth more than what they are being paid.

If you claim that this is a big company with a small company feel, and state that the CEO is passionate about his company and the employees who work there, he should help them succeed by holding seminars and refreshers on products, technical tips, sales tips, etc -- not by yelling impatiently over the intercom for So-and-So to "come to my office for Christ's sake!!!!"

We do not get paid enough for the physical and mental abuse we endure at Phenomenex.

    Pros

Family-oriented company. Very grounded with the community. Hard working and committed leaders constantly encourage employees to take on new challenges and create opportunities for themselves within the framework of the company.

    Cons

There is no career path structure or 'pay band' to work towards in sales. Reviews are not systematically scheduled or assigned with any regularity. Compensation benefits could be better. I

    Advice to Management

Less time spent in meetings would leave more time for making improvements and supporting the rest of the staff. Also a reassessment of the process used for promoting individuals might improve moral within the company, as individuals get promoted for spending more time at work than those who have families or other commitments. Perhaps a review of the reward system might benefit the company as a whole.

I have been working at Phenomenex full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Get to do everything from sales and data base management to technical, troubleshooting and on-site visits as well as some practical work with labs on occassion

    Cons

Not great pay for the industry, and very low base wage. Too much micro management and there is not enough investment in manufacturing so lead times are increasingly long.

    Advice to Management

Pay more to your sales staff so there isn't as high turnover and invest in the company so the sales team don't have to be constantly apologising to customers.

    Pros

Small team = close team. Good team environment. Friendly ethical workers. Small team = close team. Good team environment. Friendly ethical workers.

    Cons

Wage is below average in Australia. Applying American wages to Australian workers, not taking into consideration the socioeconomic differences. Employees work at phenomenex on avg between 1-2 years.

    Advice to Management

Increase pay = increase stability among employees
