I have been working at Philadelphia Gas Works full-time (More than 8 years)
Very difficult to get fired
Very low salary
you have to know someone to get ahead
IT are second class employees.
Advice to Management
Take care of IT or you will be forced to outsource who ever is left
If you are an employee, PGW is probably a great place to work. It's a very relaxed atmosphere. You are required to live within the city limits, but health benefits are free. They hardly ever fire anyone, most people work there for many, many years... so do their brothers, parents, cousins, etc.
Management does not respect the contributions of contractors or employees, processes are written, but rarely followed.
The buildings are not clean, with leaking roofs and frequently broken HVAC systems.
The organization as a whole is resistant to change, in spite of statements to the contrary.
Contractors are treated like second class citizens.
