I worked at Philadelphia Zoo part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

greatly increased knowledge of flora and fauna throughout the world, handled and cared for various exotic animals, educated public on important topics such as conservation, took part in community-benefiting and zoo-benefiting activities, great staff to work with in animal/keeper and public programs departments, was given a lot of responsibility and trust

    Cons

under-staffed so there was low flexibility in scheduling, and not always support available, extremely low pay (non-profit company), location not the safest to work when walking back to car late at night, small work space (old, small buildings), poor communication between different departments (I had a job in two different departments at same time-bosses did not communicate to each other schedules for events or training, or regular work hours so I was often double scheduled between jobs), low security at animal enclosures-often up to educators/public program employees to handle guests not following "zoo rules" which is not always a comfortable or easy situation, witnessed and experienced inappropriate behavior from bosses when discussing work issues (schedules for example)-would lose temper and "punish" employees in unacceptable manner

    Advice to Management

have master electronic schedule for zoo employees, especially for those working in multiple departments that's visible to employees and managers/bosses and available on zoo premises or at home. have quarterly or monthly (depending on length of employment) reviews for employees, as well as higher staff/managers so everyone knows what they need to personally work on for better work experience (should not have to be scared to speak up in fear of being reprimanded)

    Pros

You got free passes to a lot of activities in the city.
    Co-workers are pretty cool.

    Cons

Management. Management. Management. My management left me with no breaks, no water refills as I stood in the hot sun all day, and no ways to communicate with security or other staff on way too many occasions to be safe.

    Advice to Management

    Actually care about your employees?

I have been working at Philadelphia Zoo full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very thorough instruction/orientation process. Managers are very accommodating and helpful, but also clear on their demand for a job well done.

    Cons

Hours are not guaranteed, and the 40 hours per week are not always acquired. Weekends are largely required, as well as most holidays.

    Advice to Management

More flexibility on requesting days off.

I have been working at Philadelphia Zoo part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fast paced and friendly atmosphere to work in, your balance of work time and Lag-time are pretty balanced.

    Cons

Sometimes it does get so fast paced you get a little overwhelmed (especially on the weekends), and I do have some issues with the way the scheduling is.

    Advice to Management

The scheduling could use a little tweaking, especially where advance notice of the shifts are concerned. There were times when I had little or no advance notice of a scheduled work day, as the schedule goes up on one of my days off.

Does not have enough money making jobs with alot to do there is not enough money to make and every hour counts so be sure to work all your hours.

    Advice to Management

    pay the workers more money.

I worked at Philadelphia Zoo part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

As "roaming" guest information, I got to walk around the zoo all day and tell people about the animals. It was AWESOME!

    Cons

I was always cut early if the zoo wasn't busy enough. It was NEVER busy enough. Also, we were asked to report any peacock nests we found. I never did because I didn't want them to be "neutralized".

    Pros

    Great place to be
    Friendly staff
Management is very open and communicates well with everyone
Has many ways to encourage happiness of the employees

    Cons

Vendors in the zoo, make the employees look bad
Lower pay in comparison to other fields but understandable for a non profit

    Advice to Management

Work with outside vendors to improve the guest happiness with the staff. Vendors seem to have more interactions with the guests.
