I worked at Philips full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good products that make a positive impact on people lives and health.

    Cons

Not a very progressive company. Many processes are old and out-dated. Lots of ambiguity and slow responses make it frustrating to get work done. Slow decision making on the exec level. Many changes and re-orgs make it hard to get direction from leadership.

    Advice to Management

Stop the re-organizations and make clear direction in business strategy.

I have been working at Philips full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Nice group of people.
Good compensation package for direct employees.
    Work on life-saving products.

    Cons

    Many managers, few workers.
Historically low staffing and nearly all new managers.
Agile processes imposed on waterfall business.
Too many processes, too much rework.
Projects begin, and sometimes end, without approved specifications.
Highly regulated environment and old products lead to CAPAs and fear of audits.

    Advice to Management

Stick to a project until it's done. Stop changing directions so often.
Staff your projects before you start the clock.
Practice what you preach: You consider user needs when you design your products, why not when you design processes and tools for your business and your employees?
Company procedures and internal tools are poorly designed, leading to mistakes and wasted time. Ask for feedback and do design and testing on internal processes.

I worked at Philips as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very positive, friendly people. I had three different managers in my three years there and felt extremely empowered and supported by all of them.

    Cons

The excellent work/life balance seemed to attract people that worked at a slow pace and weren't driven. My particular division was weighed down by regulation. Toward the end of my time there, many people were leaving because of the slowdowns but management was not replacing them---added lots of stress and extra work to those remaining.

I worked at Philips full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent people working at Technician and Assembly level. They are under appreciated.

    Cons

They have a Review System where employees are reviewed on a bell curve. HR and Upper Management force Supervisors to rate average, good employees as BAD Employees. You have to to have 4 or 5 employees end up in the "needs improvement" category, even if they are perfectly fine employees. It is demoralizing for everyone.
Company is owned by the Netherlands. So they have these crazy yearly surveys where employees rate Supervisors and Managers. It can get pretty weird. Employee grudges from bad reviews are dealt through the surveys. Supervisors routinely are pushed out when they get a bad survey review from an unhappy employees who the company forces you to give a "needs improvement" review. The entire system is very devious.

    Advice to Management

Change your review system. You don't need to manufacture a bell curve, that includes making up bad reviews on good employees, just so you can give zero $$ raises.

Great company doing great things to make people's lives healthier and better. Great work/life balance. Some remote-working opportunities exist.

    I worked at Philips full-time

    Pros

Awesome, live-saving product. Smart talent. Average benefits. Modern, open-minded policies about working remote and flex time in most departments. Big site with amenities like cafeteria, gym, play field, and various on-site services. Opportunities to move around the company.

    Cons

This business unit seems to continue to struggle, getting bogged down in inefficiencies related to QMS maintenance and chronic under-staffing. This gets in the way of true success in product development, delivery and the revenue potential that's there to be captured in this market. Working there is like swimming on molasses... Progress and change are very slow. Compensation is below industry average.

    Advice to Management

Improve cohesiveness and teamwork at the management level, as when the management team is clashing, it ripples through the staff, slowing forward progress.

I have been working at Philips full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Large organization, opportunity to make big impact to global healthcare
    Experienced workforce

    Cons

    Highly political
Weak and uninspiring leadership, concerned mainly about their job security, penalize progressive thinking, lack of support and development of talent employees.
Honest hard working and innovative thinking talent gets outmaneuvered and replaced by less skilled political players.
Company losing market share, frequent layoffs caused chronic employee anxiety around job safety and encouraged political behaviors, removed Employee Engagemet Survey, lack of 360 employee feedback for leaders
    Average employee age is 50+
    Gloomy mood in the hallways
Middle management talent with MBA degrees all left.
Culture doesn't like doing things differently and doesn't embrace new ways of thinking. Lack of workforce diversity, foreign cultures and new ways of thinking at a disadvantage

    Advice to Management

Hire leadership that truly wants Philips to succeed and is skilled in doing the job (Marketing Leaders rarely have strong Marketing background) and don't force them out right away
Need talent development program - skilled talent in management roles get forced out for political reasons - corporate HR absent on that.
Measure leadership performance factoring in employee feedback
