    "Terrible At Software"

I worked at Philips full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Reasonable benefits, interesting product domains.

    Cons

The leadership of Philips believes that making software is similar to manufacturing devices. Whenever something goes wrong in the software group (or even if it doesn't) the predictable answers are to 1) fire someone 2) hire someone or 3) add a new "process"

Although I happen to have met many software quality engineers at Philips, I think management was poor at rewarding them, listening to them, and hiring them.

The worst and most troubling condition is that the leadership is not good at its essential task, which is product vision. They haven't envisioned an industry-leading product in any of the segments they're targeting. Every product is "me, too" and Philips as company is coasting on the basis of its market position as one of the few manufacturers of large hospital modalities, which long ago locked in many hospitals to its radiology information system. When the "me-too" strategy fails to enflame Philip's customers' imaginations, development is blamed. In fact, whatever the issue, development is blamed. Development is low man on the totem pole at Philips.

I wasn't going to write this review, but they did something petty and annoying after I quit. Since I quit within the first year of hire, I had to pay back my signing bonus. Which I had no problem doing. I left my mailing address and contact information with them, and was promised to receive a letter with payment instructions. But instead of sending me a normal invoice, they put me directly into collection! This impacted my FICO score. It's such a petty malice (or gross incompetence) that I've changed my mind and I'm telling the truth.

Don't work for this company if you can find better!

    Advice to Management

Focus on product vision, sales and marketing, and hiring top talent. Do not focus on how engineers do their jobs. Instead, focus on the recruitment pipeline and on rewarding impact. Oh, and you're going to have to pay more. A lot more.

    Cons

    Advice to Management

I worked at Philips full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Compensation, benefits, and work-life balance

    Cons

Company-wise, they don't seem to know what they are doing. Even the most basic of tasks will consume days. Don't expect any team-building. The company clearly states its culture, values, and professional development, yet, management does exactly the opposite. Philips is an "innovation" company, yet the management style is command and control. As a result, negativity and deceit are common and your career will suffer. Public reprimands occur frequently - people routinely referred to as "stupid.."

I worked at Philips full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Can be relaxed work place
    Work-life balance
    Average salary

    Cons

Lack of quality in the team , they don't do any unit tests or functional testing, encouraging stitching , and hacking to claim features and meet deadlines.

Chaotic team planning or during stand up .
Use a legacy technology stacks (like ten years old)
Lack of diversity , most of the team is from India

If you are a software engineer looking for a quality & exciting place then look elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Hire talented software engineers, and experienced managers, you have a good idea for health-care software , but really poor implementation (design, coding, testing) that lacks quality with many defects , look for diversity, why all the current team is from India .

I have been working at Philips full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They seem like they care for a large corporation about their employees.
A lot of divisions feel like a lot smaller company.

    Cons

Goals for particular quarter seem to overshadow bigger picture .
Because Philips buys promising companies they tend to not to intrude with polices or work procedures. From division to division one might run equally efficient and the others a riding the backs of the most hard working employees.

    Advice to Management

Quarter goals are important but not on the expense of customers and employees. Sometimes you might just have to fail.

I have been working at Philips full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Benefits are nice.
Healthcare and technology opportunities are great. There are so many potential ways this can be exploited that I feel giddy about it.
The company sits on a huge amount of data in healthcare and personal health that can be mined if we work as a team.

    Cons

The company at each business unit level needs a clear strategy. It feels like we are grasping for things in the dark.

It feels that nepotism and favoritism is rife. At our location, every person they hire is from the office in from Israel or former Toshiba employees at the higher level. At the lower level, they
keep bringing in team members from the offices in India who get locked in because of L1 visa issues based on what I understand.

It is not a dynamic culture. The silicon valley vibe is missing and the experience is a bit jaded.

    Advice to Management

It is important that we as a company take big risks and bet on some big ideas. When I joined the company, I felt that we could realize the potential to make difference in people's live, but it doesn't feel that way. Help me to feel better about my career choice, please!
