  1. "Good learning experience"

Current Intern - Summer Teaching Assistant in Andover, MA

I have been working at Phillips Andover as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Extremely friendly and collaborative staff. Summer educators are very well qualified. For new and aspiring teachers, this is a great way to learn from veterans and gain experience in front of compliant and enthusiastic students.

    Cons

For five weeks, not much time off and on call and on duty all the time. The experience is definitely exhausting and time management is crucial.

    Advice to Management

I hope they stay as welcoming as possible and also offer some flexibility to Teaching Assistants on their course choices.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Phillips Andover full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Friendly staff, smart and kind faculty, the best and most well-behaved students in the world, promotes learning and skill development, beautiful campus, amazing free lunch, good vacation time

    Cons

low wages, weakening health care plan

    Advice to Management

Employees need incentives to work hard. There is almost no compensation/reward for being an "A player".

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

sense of community; free meals; no rent; great students; interesting colleagues; generous vacation; save money; no commute; pride of working for a well-respected institution; safe environment for families; do not pay for the internet or for cable

    Cons

it's like a cult; the pay is attached to your age; you're expected to be a triple threat (teach, coach, and work in a dorm); people overwork themselves; free housing= living with students in old dorms; expectation is that you attend plays and sporting events; colleagues think of themselves as college professors; public safety patrols campus and records everything they see

    Advice to Management

    change faculty meeting from monday nights to thursday mornings; do not require people to live in the dorm between 8 and 12 years (explain why some people do not have to do so);

    Pros

A beautiful campus filled with history. The atmosphere is regal and inspiring. Students are from all walks of life and all are treated with respect. Free lunch for all employees in the student dining hall. Buildings are from the 1700s and 1800s and steeped in interesting tales of history. There is a lot of respect for the family and employees are given leeway in scheduling family related off time. The Summer is very quiet and quiet beautiful.

    Cons

Staff sometimes not treated the same as Faculty. Perks are different. Most faculty are kind but some seem to look down on the staff.

    Advice to Management

Cherish your workers faculty AND staff. Keep the information flowing to all.
