I worked at Physicians Mutual Insurance full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The job is not horribly diffiucult but there are some challenges. You have decent benefits and a relaxed atmosphere. They do work with your schedule.

    Cons

There is not enough work so expect to work in other departments most of the day. No matter how hard you work and how well you do, you will never reach the midpoint for pay. It is very difficult to move from the mail processing center to the home office for job growth. If you work for the mail processing center and you have children in school, don't expect to get paid for snow days if you have to stay home with your kids. You can't take vacation time for it. This is only at MPC. I don't know what it is like at the home office.

    Advice to Management

Forcing everyone to keep their pay a secret only proves that the lack of incentive is due to employees finding out that the workers that show up late and play on their phones all day make the same and sometimes more than the ones who give 100% everyday. Show the good workers that they matter.

    Pros

people in other departments really are nice and care about what they do and who they interact with. great atmosphere outside of telesales

    Cons

telesales has no outside of department contact or employee interaction within the company. also quality assurance rips away any chance of getting the bonus pay you deserve. usually it's within the last week of the month. which is convenient for management because agents bust their a** all month ready for incentive and it's really up to them who they want to pay. and yes, they have their favorites

    Advice to Management

stop micro managing and get some engagement going. it's a call center atmosphere so it's understandable it's limited time. but treating employees like kids where they get in trouble for getting off the phone creates the lack of motivation. managers are slimey with how they make sure they don't pay you for your hard work. don't have the option for performance based incentives if you are going to take it away anyways.

I worked at Physicians Mutual Insurance part-time

    Pros

Competitive compensation, room to grow within the company, beautiful headquarters, attractive downtown location and office, very accessible and transparent leadership

    Cons

Longtime employees hard to work around, older workforce, not adaptable in method of communication, not efficient in structuring of departments and production

    Advice to Management

Keep the work culture up to date and challenging for the employees, as many employees get in a rut and aren't challenged to new heights given their long-standing employment with the company

    Pros

Free leads as a solid base and good training on developing other strategies. Great management and support. Unparalleled presentation with bulletproof facts to support the highest ranked company in the country. Very caring all the way from the top for the agents' and the customers' needs. Great commission and bonus structure with great residual opportunities without having to recruit other agents. Great Products and Fantastic Startup Bonuses

    Cons

A little bit old school with paper apps, but working hard to get updated. Limited on the Life products. Also, needs more marketing for Life. Medicare prices a little high, but easily overcome with a solid presentation and solid company.

    Advice to Management

Move quicker on the changes. We are looking forward to what is coming and can't wait for it to happen.

    Pros

    Cons

2 weeks vacations to start. It takes several years to acquire additional vacation.
    401k hasn't gone anywhere.

    Pros

At Physicians they really care about their employees and often have fun things you can be a part of throughout the year. Kickball league, golf league, company has discount tickets to the rodeo that we sponsor as well as the Symphony's Christmas Spectacular, a family night, and random departmental get-togethers.
Compensation is above average, benefits are good. The benefit of being a non-traded, mutual insurer is they can spend money on things to keep employees happy.

    Cons

The entry level positions can be demanding, but once you learn the business there is room for advancement. They offer free insurance courses, take advantage of it and the cons become pros.

    Advice to Management

    Stay the course.

    Pros

High hourly pay, great benefits, amazing people. Positive reviews by multiple current and former employees. Professional call environment.

    Cons

Phone number listed on the website to contact them is useless as it goes to a directory where you have to know your party's extension and there is no way to search for an extension or browse through them. This includes HR, so you cannot double-check receipt or status of an application.

    Advice to Management

Don't say you "can't find an application" after someone has not only received an email verifying it but sent that email BACK TO YOU that includes the reference number for the received application. This is like saying you "can't" find a house with a map and a GPS and the person living there already got a letter from you.

I worked at Physicians Mutual Insurance (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice people, good calls, good training. Nice cafeteria. Good parking. Good pay. I think the benefits would have been there eventually. Part time work. I loved the waterfall on the physicians campus. Beautiful area

    Cons

not enough space, shared desks, scripted, not enough time to eat. I found it hard to be myself with the the customers on the phone because of the scripts. I felt isolated where they are located. Not enough natural light in there. Don't allow employess on the grass on campus by water fall cafe

    Advice to Management

I know it takes money, but you have to open that up more. And the dress code also needs to be changed.
