I worked at Pier 1 Imports full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pier 1 can be a fun, upbeat place to work. It's fast paced, there is new merchandise every week and for the most part the customers are great.

    Cons

Managers who are inequipped to handle the magnitude of running a store.

    Advice to Management

If you don't know what you're doing don't blame it on other people! Be honest if you are over your head. Be kind, especially to your seasoned associates who know way more than you about the product and the running of the store! Don't change their schedules without letting them know, I mean really, get a grip!

    Pros

The people are warm and collaborative and the company culture was previously positive, personal and relaxed. Great products in the stores.

    Cons

The Executive Management has lost their way and has had a large % of turnover. Calculation of margin is problematic and one of the root causes for the financial decline. Executive Management has adopted an 'every man for himself' philosophy, not caring for decisions negatively affecting the lower levels. No upward mobility. Culture has suffered from Executive Managment's recent hires.

    Advice to Management

Do 360 assessment for all VP's and up. It will be most enlightening.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A supportive team of Associates and Management.

    Cons

Very low hourly pay, with many demands that go beyond sales. With limited hours and on-call working demands, including the fact that the employee must give a three week advance notice of any scheduled or unscheduled commitments for the part-time employee, it makes it very difficult to schedule both personal and professional commitments.

Pier ! expects the Sales Associate to find a replacement for any needed time off that is needed three weeks in advance. This is difficult when there is a needed doctors appt. or other circumstances that require attention prior to a three-week notice.

    Advice to Management

Be more supportive of the associates working for Pier !; have a plan to have replacement personnel available within a 3-week notification. Be more considerate for part-time employees to schedule needed time off, and not placing the burden to find a replacement three weeks in advance. The company needs to have alternative solutions for their three-week commitment from it's employees, especially when their is a medical or bonifide need to have a day off.

    Advice to Management

Let us work under buyers not a middle manager
