I worked at Piper Jaffray full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A few of my colleagues were good people

    Cons

Miserable hours, most senior bankers treated you horribly

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Piper Jaffray full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    There are some, I guess.

    Cons

    Politics reign

Management says one thing and does another

Everyone kisses up and kicks down. No accountability towards lower-level employees.

Many of the senior managers are creeps - they engage in *all* the types of bad behavior Wall Street is famous for.

    Advice to Management

Clean up your act. Stop pretending Piper is so squeaky clean, when it's not.

I worked at Piper Jaffray as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Steep learning curve
    -Lean deal teams
    -Strong in healthcare
-My MD demonstrated concern for my professional development, and I imagine most MD's treat their junior employees with respect.
-Some analysts willing to lend a helping hand to interns
-Even though it is a 2nd tier firm, other employers, even outside finance, respect having IB experience, and Piper on your resume can boost your odds of employment elsewhere.

    Cons

    -Toxic culture
    -Long unrewarding hours
-Dreary office space with limited snacks, amenities
-Not enough formal training, yet expected to perform highly from the start
-Accepted internship offer on agreement I would be placed in a certain group and ultimately ended up in an inferior group with no say in the matter. Demonstrates lack of care for junior employees.

    Advice to Management

-Bulk up the NYC presence; clearly it is a midwestern bank, but the New York office feels isolated and irrelevant.
-Provide more formal training and mentorship.
-Long hours are a part of Wall Street, but interns were often held in the office unnecessarily for bureaucratic reasons and to respect the hierarchy, which seems ridiculous.

I worked at Piper Jaffray full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Middle market investment banking lends itself to give junior team members a ton of responsibility right out of college.

    Cons

Piper has a strong presence in the healthcare industry vertical, but presence in others is virtually nonexistent.

    Pros

Nice location downtown its right by the bus stops and the walkways.

    Cons

All "management" are a joke to work with. "My way or the highway"

    Advice to Management

    quit!

I worked at Piper Jaffray as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Regular meal and cab expenses

    Cons

    - A lot of admin work and no financial modeling
    - Pay is not consistent with ibanking internships; it is SALARIED not hourly so expect to work long hours without the right compensation
    - Rude culture; I was rarely called by my name
    - No real staffer to give you work; hence, you end up doing bits and pieces here and there for random people without completing a project/deal from start to finish
    - No mentorship to help you grow

    Advice to Management

Create an internship similar to that of other banks and you might retain some interns when you extend offers

I worked at Piper Jaffray full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Remarkably enduring brand
Strong senior bankers dedicated to delivering for clients
Good cultural feel in individual industry groups

    Cons

Persistently and demonstrably poor and inexperienced leadership, with a bewildering sense of entitlement
Lack of client engagement and accountability on part of senior management
Absence of vision and passion to win at helm
Very siloed structure with disincentives to cross industry teams and work as one firm

    Advice to Management

Have vision and exert leadership rather than reciting corporate platitudes as strategy.

    Pros

Talented individual contributors. A great place to learn without the rewards.

    Cons

Inept management, lacks talent across the board.

    Advice to Management

Stay away from playing politics. Please compare yourself to your peers. Maybe you talked yourself in to a promotion. Ask yourself if you are really qualified for the job? If not, step aside.
