    Pros

Middle market bank that pays street, has decent work life balance, friendly company culture, "do it yourself" environment

    Cons

Limited training and career development opportunities, somewhat stale working environment, culture varies per group

    Advice to Management

Invest in people. They're all you have.

    Pros

Good client exposure on and deal flow in Cap Mkts.

    Cons

Lack of M&A deal flow. Lots of pitching for deals that go nowhere (same as any other IB)

I have been working at Piper Jaffray full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

All based on Minneapolis office experiences:

-Fairly laid back as far as banking goes
    -People are pretty friendly
-Great cost of living in Minneapolis (same pay regardless of location)
    -Lean deal teams
-Lots of exposure to clients and management teams
-My industry group is really well run with the exception of one terrible manager

I mean overall I liked it enough as an intern to come back full time I guess

    Cons

-Long hours (as expected for IBD though), extreme unpredictability and lack of visibility to future schedule
-Brand name isn't the best which significantly impacts exit opps
    -Minneapolis location
-Lack of supporting staff (don't have somebody printing books 24/7, analysts have to do far more admin work than at bigger banks)
-Perks are mediocre compared to a lot of other banks (meal stipend, weekend policies, etc.)
    -Pay slightly below street
-Company stresses work life balance but it's almost a joke how much it is actually implemented (hint: pretty much not at all)
-Abusive senior bankers seemingly never get punished for their actions
-Some companies we work with are honestly kind of crappy which means deals fall apart all the time
-401k plans and other employee benefits are mediocre at best
-Office is so lame. Break room is terrible, view is terrible, etc.
-IT is an absolute pain to deal with. You'd think unblocking a website was the end of the world for them

    Advice to Management

Actually implement the policies that are supposed to help junior bankers. Don't promote BS such as the "power of partnership" then let senior bankers cuss you out and scream and belittle you for something that you did absolutely nothing wrong at all without any sort of repercussions. Should make bonuses and other perks more competitive to other banks.

I have been working at Piper Jaffray as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Get the opportunity to work with an analyst team with people similar to your age. Gain important industry experience and get to work on real life projects. People you work with are very friendly and always willing to help out on projects and questions you may have.

    Cons

Sometimes work is slow, so there isn't much for an intern to do.

    Pros

Fast-paced with wide scope of projects

    Cons

Working at their smaller asset management company, Advidory Research. No established training program.

    Advice to Management

Continue to evolve in the energy industry. There's a huge demand for it now and in the future.

I worked at Piper Jaffray full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great place to learn about investment banking industry. Mid western culture is a better deal than New York style banking. Cautious about picking a group. Overall a very positive experience.

    Cons

Typical cons, such as long hours, tight deadlines, demanding bosses and clients. Perhaps, the firm needs to provide more help placing junior people in post-banking positions.

    Advice to Management

Better junior talent development, better access to databases, introduce support services for junior staff (word processing, binding, etc.) so that they can focus on actual work instead of busy work. Jump on the wellbeing train like the larger banks, introduce mandatory days off, etc.

I have been working at Piper Jaffray full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The bankers in the Minneapolis office have a really laid-back attitude, which is unusual to find in an investment banking environment. Everyone facilitates your development and learning experiences, and takes concern to your growth, development, an work-life balance.

    Cons

Long hours (inherent in the industry). HR and the senior bankers really stress the work-life balance, and try to follow new policies implemented regarding no work after 12pm on Fridays, protected weekends, etc. but it rarely pans out.

    Advice to Management

Plan materials in advance, always indicate due dates, eliminate unnecessary sense of urgency when possible.

I worked at Piper Jaffray full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly colleagues with decent tools including relatively up-to-date hardware and premium software tools. Competitive entry and mid-level salaries. You can make what you want out of your role.

    Cons

Cons aren't Piper's fault, it's the business. I'm not going to list the cons of Wall Street here. I've read and heard people say "Minnesotta Nice, Minnesotta Ice." And there's truth there. I've seen more than a handfull of people get screwed and I've watched juniors get strung out to dry like a pair of cheap undies. But welcome to finance...half of those folks deserved it. I do think the gripes you will have here will largely be the same as the issues you'll have at other banks, both big and small. So maybe some introspective soul-searching is in order for the folks who are super negative on this firm.

    Advice to Management

I think mgmt is better than most banks.
