  • Long hours (as expected for IBD though), extreme unpredictability and lack of visibility to future schedule (in 6 reviews)

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Folksy Mid-west culture mixed with Wall Street go-getter mentality.

    Cons

No negative comment. Nice place to work.

    Advice to Management

Not qualified to give senior management advice. Thank you.

    Pros

Great fellow employees and family oriented company structure. In a high pressure industry, Piper Jaffray is a bit less stressful than other banks.

    Cons

Minneapolis centric. You are 'out of the loop' if you are not in Minnie. Pay scale seemed less than industry particularly in NYC and San Francisco.

    Advice to Management

Meet with employees outside of Minnie. Clearly communicate expectations.

  3. "Very good culture and access to deals and sr bankers."

    Pros

Great company. Will weather the storm better than other mid market banks. As an analyst, you generally work directly with the senior bankers on the team. In general the teamwork is better than exists with my friends at bulge bracket banks. Some very strong sector bankers. This is much more stable environment than i'm hearing from my friends at other banks in town.

    Cons

Not on the high end of comp compared with bulge firms. Sometimes difficult to know where you stand, but my banker has been helpful.

    Advice to Management

Seem to make decisions on staffing which is short sighted. Everyone sees the need to bring in more senior talent.

    Pros

Great people working at the company who genuinely care about your well-being. A lot of support from your managers.

    Great benefits included as well.

    Cons

Sometimes the work can be demanding, and there was a lot of time sensitive duties that could spurt up at once. Also a lot of daily duties on top of that, so some days could be quite stressful.

Only left to pursue opportunities in a different field (software development).

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work, PJC is a sound company and it seemed to me that they hire the correct people.

I worked at Piper Jaffray full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Professional work environment, competitive atmosphere, well respected in the investment community. Great opportunity wo work with like minded people and build relationships with institutional clients. Great comp package.

    Cons

Opportunities for advancement are somewhat limited due to employees with significant tenure having a stronghold on legacy clientele. Not a lot of negatives here really except that in volatile market times, there is a lot of pressure to perform.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. Piper has managed to make it thru very turbulent market conditions due to managements long term views. Don't get too greedy when times are good and stay the course when times are tough.

I worked at Piper Jaffray full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Progressive organization, good corporate citizen, heading in the right direction. Excellent work culture.

    Cons

Staffing can be lean, so you may get overworked in your role, but it's a good experience.

    Advice to Management

    Keep it up!

    Pros

PJC is a good place to build a career in investment banking with a lean deal team and direct access to senior bankers and management teams with lots of responsibility.

    Cons

Deal teams can run lean which makes it difficult sometimes to stay on top of all the work and projects to put forth good results. However, the teamwork in the group is strong.

I have been working at Piper Jaffray full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great culture, many of my coworkers are not the typical "investment banking" type... they are nice!
    Lean deal teams
Given more responsibility from the start
Compensation is on par with other banks. You actually make more because of the lower cost of living if you are at the HQ

    Cons

    Not an amazing brand/prestige
Great exit opps may be more difficult to obtain
Not huge deals, so what you are working on probably won't be in the WSJ or known by people outside of finance

    Advice to Management

Keep it up. Focus on recruiting and paying for the best possible talent. Try to position Piper so it can compete better with "elite boutiques" by framing it as an "elite MM firm" i.e. Prestige

    Pros

Good culture, really strong healthcare group

    Cons

PJC is a middle-market and sometimes will have less dealflow
