I have been working at Pittsburgh full-time

    Pros

Working for the public can be rewarding. Lots of vacation time offered. Good benefits

    Cons

Salaries not competitive. Career paths are poorly defined. The organization itself is fairly dysfunctional but getting better

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to make tough decisions just because of fear that the public/press will scrutinize.

    Pros

Ok pay, good benefits, good retirement, flexibility, low pressure, room to grow if you can/want to.

    Pros

Mayor's vision for the city is strong, good for residents and the city's future. Pittsburgh has been elevated to national attention in 2 short years.

    Cons

The City is lacking people with experience in strategy, operations, and management. Implementers who know how to get the job done. It's government as usual.

    Advice to Management

Hire leaders who know how to lead and will ensure the mayor's vision (not theirs) is realized. People with real management experience. This is important work not a lemonade stand. Your employees are your consitutents too.

I have been working at Pittsburgh (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits, no micromanagement, good pay.

    Cons

Huge resistance to change from both upper levels and subordinates. Local government, so policies are sometimes decided by people who have no knowledge of the field they're trying to govern. Makes for bad policies. Very little cohesion between departments, makes it difficult to get things done or even figure out who to contact from another department.

    Advice to Management

Let your department heads who are experts in their fields make decisions, not elected officials who act only based upon how many votes they think a policy will win them.
