I worked at Planned Parenthood part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The staff in the clinics including the managers are great. Fun to work with and they care about the patients.

    Cons

The CEO and higher up managers are horrible. They base your raise on if people no show for appointments. They make it your fault people don't show up. It's getting to be all about money and not staff anymore. They don't make patients take responsibility for anything. You have to bend over backwards for them even if they are an hour late for the appointment. The patients run the clinic not the staff. It does not pay well at all and CMA 's are treated poorly. They treat them like the only thing we can do is a shot and they pay you like it too. It's too bad it's like that. I miss the staff I worked with.

    Advice to Management

Remember your staff are people too. Money isn't everything.

I worked at Planned Parenthood full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Really important cause; employees are dedicated to the mission
    - Highly skilled colleagues
    - Working here helps your resume a lot if you want to work in sexual and reproductive health
    - Decent benefits and PTO

    Cons

    - Lots of hiring from personal networks, which leads to a lack of diversity in many departments
    - High dependence on expensive consultants for projects/inititiatives instead of growing employee skills, so there is a lot of turnover AND there tends to be a lack of institutional knowledge when creating new projects/initiatives
    - Dysfunctional management/leadership
    - Leadership is not held accountable
    - Management style is fear-based and ego-based
    - Work-life balance is terrible unless you are a parent, ironically; terrible culture of martyrdom and lack of respect for boundaries and self-care
    - Oftentimes projects are based on the whims of some senior leaders and staff are not allowed to push back

    Advice to Management

Create systems of accountability for management

    Pros

    Amazing mission, incredibly dedicated staff.

    Cons

Low pay, high-stress. If you work hard you are given more and more work and not compensated accordingly.

    Advice to Management

Pay employees more fairly for their hard work.

I have been working at Planned Parenthood full-time

    Pros

The mission to serve the community is outstanding

    Cons

The company's mission often times overlook those who perform the work to maintain the mission. By that I mean, the patients needs are priority all the time and staff are not given the proper tools to meet those needs.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the staff in all departments. They are hands on and can contribute from a different perspective. Upper management has a bad case of tunnel vision and it reflects in employee retention.

    Advice to Management

Better communication with employees. Employee retention is very low.

    Pros

Lots of passionate political folks who care about women's reproductive rights.

    Cons

    Political environment
Hierarchy creates an environment of YES people. Things remain stale and inefficient.

    Advice to Management

If you hire people with experience, use their experience to help drive the organization. Embrace change, you need it. Also, stop the petty politics amongst senior management. It's embarrassing to watch.
