Hi there! I interview for a position with a planned Parenthood this week for a role as Special Events Manager to oversee their fundraising department. Because most of my work and experience has been in freelance. I’m having a hard time figuring out what my work experience translates to in a Salary position. Therefore, I wonder what my base pay should be. Does anyone have any experience in the role?

    Pros

Great co-workers, hours are good, pay is ok. Helping women with their reproductive needs is the main reason I work for Planned Parenthood.

    Cons

Expensive health benefits! I cannot afford the health care insurance for my family and I. It is outrageously expensive. You would think that working in the healthcare field that you'd het better benefits. You don't!

There is no management "team". PPMM is run solely by the CEO who allows no dissenting opinions.

    Pros

Very committed, long-term, on the ground staff who go above and beyond to fulfill the mission of making every family a healthy family. The benefit the organization provides to the community is outstanding and undisputed.

    Cons

The org is chronically understaffed, there is horrific staff moral, and bad seeds are allowed to remain. (Some of whom sit on management team.) If you have a family, and you are trying to work your way up, regardless of how much you produce, don't expect it to be flexible without punitive action. HR cannot address concerns even with proof of a hostile workplace; everything stops with the CEO.

Not a bad first job out of college

    Pros

Friendly and helpful coworkers The benefits are decent Clinical benefits where you get a certain amount of money per year to spend at the Planned Parenthood clinics for any services you want Opportunities for advancement within the company Most of the time you feel like you are making a difference in other people's lives

    Cons

The pay is too low In my department it was very hard to take time off and if you were sick but do not have a doctor's note, then that counts as an unexcused absence I don't like that they have separate PTO and sick time. I would prefer to just get PTO and use it for whatever purpose I want to use it for. I didn't really like my supervisor Our internet speed was slow a lot of the time which made it difficult to perform some work-related tasks We were only allowed to wear jeans one day a month whereas many other companies in the area have jeans Friday every Friday. I am nervous about the long-term future of the Rocky Mountains affiliate - the one where I used to work. Let's just say that these are some very uncertain economic times.

    Abusive Work Environment

    Pros

The greatest benefit gained from working at PPGP was the connections and relationships I made with front line staff. The organizers, educators, and clinic staff are by far the most dedicated, hard working, bright, empathetic, caring, self aware, and powerful leaders I've ever had the privilege of working alongside. Other than that, through trial by fire, I was grateful to eventually learn that PPGP is NOT an organization that should be representative of what true reproductive justice advocacy should look like.

    Cons

Inequitable pay structures; the CEO made a quarter of a million dollars while front line staff often made nearly poverty level wages. Classism was often upheld by promoting folks into leadership with little to no leadership experience but with advanced academic backgrounds. Leadership often employed bullying and emotional manipulation/abuse. The only gender and race diversity that exists is among front line staff who are coincidentally paid the least. The organization as a whole continuously failed to further the community engagement and allyship that is essential to reproductive justice activism. Overall, this organization taught me what a repro organization does NOT look like.
