Hi there! I interview for a position with a planned Parenthood this week for a role as Special Events Manager to oversee their fundraising department. Because most of my work and experience has been in freelance. I’m having a hard time figuring out what my work experience translates to in a Salary position. Therefore, I wonder what my base pay should be. Does anyone have any experience in the role?

    Planned Parenthood South Texas Review

    Business Outlook

    Pros

A lot of opportunities to do various tasks within the company. CEO is localized with your affiliate.

    Cons

Scheduling is a nightmare because you are a floater and they give as little as 30 min notice of you having to be at another clinic which greatly alters your work hours some days. Clinics aren’t open 40 hours a week, but they take your PTO for not reaching 40 hours. Management at the clinics is by far subpar.

    Hands-on but hostile work environment

Aug 23, 2022 - Health Services Specialist I in San Mateo, CA

    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Much more hands on than most medical assisting opportunities so you are able to learn a lot. You're working the front desk, back office, and lab. Back office duties include directly assisting clinicians by prepping and cleaning exam rooms, rooming patients, doing intake, providing patient education, charting, administering injections, doing blood draws, running tests, etc. The San Mateo location is in a beautiful area. There is an opportunity to monitor the patient during more invasive procedures.

    Cons

The San Mateo location is a very unhealthy and hostile work environment where employees verbally harass and even bully each other due to extreme work stress and an inexcusably terrible hourly wage ($21/hr if you take a test to do translating, $20 if you don't). Employees are often forced to take on their coworkers' responsibilities because there is no consequence for missing work, even if it is last minute or without a note, so people call out FREQUENTLY. And by frequently I mean multiple times a week. Because of this, a large amount of mistakes are made and you don't get any breaks besides a 30-minute lunch most days. Don't apply here if you value your mental health. Other cons: - An alarming amount of employees talk about their patients with each other and judge them which is extremely upsetting to witness in a healthcare environment. - Training is very slow and takes months because there are hardly any trainers and people call out frequently so you or the person who was supposed to train you has to cover them. - The protestors outside of the parking lot are very aggressive and have even become physically violent in the past. - The "break room" doesn't even have space to sit down and there's only one picnic table behind the building.

    Cons

Limited availability for growth and small funding opportunities. The abilities of staff could have been further reached.

The people doing the work are inspring, the people above them...

    Feb 16, 2022 - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Generous benefits (especially vacation time) and the mission-driven aspect of the job means you'll probably be working with a lot of driven and interesting people. For a not-for-profit, the organization is well-funded.

    Cons

Senior leadership for departments and divisions is generally quite poor across most areas, leading to lots of inefficiency and misguided initiatives that trickle down to smaller teams. This creates a culture that rewards office politics vs. delivering valuable work.

Amazing working for an organization that truly wants to serve its patients better

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Amazing, driven, passionate staff. Ability to learn a lot because departments are typically short staffed or mostly junior staff.

    Cons

Very little direction is provided from management. Structure of the organization (affiliate model) makes efficiency difficult, if not impossible.

    Pros

Excellent health benefits, salary, and promotion opportunities for women in upper level positions. There are a lot of resources to take advantage of in order to get visionary projects off the ground.

    Cons

It is extremely corporate despite it's status as a non-profit. There is no race analysis and can be difficult for employees of color. Public Policy division lacks a true understanding of the circumstances of actual Planned Parenthood patients.
