I worked at Plante Moran as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

"Best Companies to Work For" thing actually seemed true there. I always thought those things were bs, but PM really treated the interns well. I know they are trying to "sell" us on the company, but it still seemed like a great place to work.

    Cons

No windows in my office, and some days are very long doing tax work. I'm not cut out for 40+ hour work weeks at a computer, no matter how good the company is or how much I like my coworkers.

    Advice to Management

Not much. I wouldn't change anything about the company besides maybe a different office environment or more food. Maybe a little healthy salad as a snack.

I have been working at Plante Moran full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Decent firm if you want to focus on middle market.

    Cons

Can't compete with the big firms, although they try. HR is a cancer - have run out so many with the gossiping, back-biting and bullying. They are supposed to promote the culture, not kill it.

    Advice to Management

PLEASE investigate the questionable behavior of the HR team. Don't lose touch with what differentiates Plante Moran from other firms.

I worked at Plante Moran (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good, recognizable brand among companies that will contract with Plante.

    Cons

Plante is VERY selective with hiring, almost cult-like. Diversity and inclusion is zero, therefore innovative thought does not exist in their pool of sameness.

    Advice to Management

Consider corporate social responsibility to the community you serve ....improve and measure hiring practices.

I worked at Plante Moran (More than a year)

    Pros

Great company culture and commitment to staff development. Work with very intelligent professionals. Opportunities to work see different types of engagements. Hours during busy season are not as bad as other public accounting firms. The partners are very hands on and really contribute to the professional development. Competitive pay coming out of college

    Cons

Regional public accounting firm. Limited service line offerings, however, it appears the firm is expanding to other offerings.

I worked at Plante Moran full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Clients - Terrific client base provides good learning opportunities, and network building.

Brand - Good reputation, resume builder.

Perks - PTO is good, but impossible to utilize when you are expected to bill 2,600+ hours.

    Cons

Hollow Corporate Culture - "Jerk Free", "The Golden Rule", "Island you don't want to leave". All of these hollow cliches perpetuate the "Best Place To Work" accolade. Tons of passive aggressive personalities in my experience at the firm.

Partners - Way too many partners. Very few partners that have any ability to lead and develop staff. Even fewer that have your best interest on their priority list. Kind of an old boys club. If you can last 15 years at the firm, congrats you are a partner. No real fast track. Some partners churn through staff at incredibly high turnover rates, but are never held accountable for not developing staff and treating them poorly. I had partners tell me they were powerless to impact change if it was related to a rain making partners group.

Compensation - Rigid system for rewarding employees which disenfranchises high achievers. Not competitive with peer groups. If you aren't a partner, you are vastly underpaid.
