I have been working at PlayStation

    Pros

Good culture, lots of fun events and relatively good work life balance.

    Cons

A bit antiquated in the systems and analysis conducted in certain departments and senior management seems content with the status quo.

I have been working at PlayStation full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - Weekly lunches - Bagel/donut Fridays - Central SF location; close to transit - Cool brand recognition; looks great on a resume - Good work-life balance - High visibility of product - People are passionate about building great products - Healthy relationship with product and engineering - Efforts to create a fun culture: game launches and swag, karaoke, version release parties, Christmas parties, hackathons, happy hours

    Cons

    - Senior management is a mess - out of touch with employees and current technology, false transparency, lack of objectivity across all team members, inability to establish baseline of trust with all team members, does not inspire confidence, all buzzwords and no real communication - Below-market compensation - Constant political struggle and general low morale - Projects are routinely killed - It’s a well-known fact in the Bay Area that contractors are treated like second-class citizens and are at best strung along for years - Process and progress occur at a glacial pace - Constant conflict with Tokyo office - their word is law and they are beyond feedback - Sterile cube farm - Low diversity - No employee development/lack of mentorship - Feature bloat - Verticals are completely siloed - Huge gaps of time in between projects - No one gets fired but they are managed out (demoted, compensation is cut)

    I worked at PlayStation

    Pros

The food, coffee, and special events.

    Cons

Senior management is negative and puts others down as if it's a game. This demeaning attitude is also reflected in people who work closely with management. You're constantly criticized by others and never given support/encouragement. This was a regular complaint I heard from peers. You would constantly hear employees in Procurement and Project Management complaining about how stressed they were. The managers are incompetent and promoted without any experience in their field, with bunk degrees (DeVry, Phoenix, etc.). They also hire family members without experience in their field. This makes it difficult for anyone with actual qualifications to work effectively and make improvements. Many employees are incompetent and don't reply to emails or phone calls.

I worked at PlayStation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Whimsical and creative production environment.

    Cons

Still has an antiquated "top down" management approach. Confining structure and to stodgy for the bay area. Questionable ethical behavior among some senior management folk. No stock options or RSUs.

I have been working at PlayStation

    Pros

    - engaging field - great people - great benefits and corporate perks

    Cons

    - questionable initiatives/direction - senior management is incentivized to prioritize department performance over overall business performance - lower levels of the company are underpaid

I have been working at PlayStation full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Fun place to work. Cool products and great brand. Video game industry is very dynamic and fast paced. Great perks and discounts on products.

    Cons

Hard to move and advance within the organization. Highly political and senior management does not do a very good job of promoting or mentoring.

I have been working at PlayStation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The people and culture are great. Discounts on most Sony products. Great place to start your career.

    Cons

I stay because not all the senior management is bad, but SNEI has some of the worst senior managers ever. Big egos, no direction, no planning, public ridicule, micro micro micro management.

I worked at PlayStation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Free games here and there. Also there is an onsite gym and great parking. Honestly this is all of the pros I can think of.

    Cons

    1. SCEA departments are in silos, no one shares info which is a detriment to the whole company. I have worked for a few large companies and I have never been so lost in an organization as I am here at SCEA. 2. Everything is extremely slow to get approved. You have layers upon layers of people to approve the simplest things. No one seems to have the authority to move a project forward. Be prepared to have about 10-15 people to review something either upfront or included as you go. 3. There is a lot of dead weight in every area of the company. People tend to not respond in a timely manner and pass the buck on almost every aspect of a project with little to no accountability. Some Directors would rather skate by or ignore issues then tackling them head on. Not sure how some of these people have their title, it feels like they were promoted within without the true know how (it is definitely a frat culture if you know what I mean). Unfortunately these are the reasons why things take so long to get to market. Management is all talk with no actions, and if we do see actions they take far too long to implement so much so they become outdated. 4. Very disorganized starting at the top of the chain with no processes in place for software development, project management, and product management, which makes things very confusing when you are trying to accomplish your daily tasks or your job in general. 5. No one cares what you are working on and seem to manage at a huge distance from direct reports. It feels like Senior management right down to the Director level is thinking - "I don't know what you are working on as long as my agenda is being pushed". There is a need-to-know attitude and secrecy around everything. 6. First Party Studios run the company. It feels like they all collectively bought SCEA, when they say jump we all say how high. 7. Japan makes decisions that are not right for the Americas. Business is based on out of date thinking, processes, and extreme cultural differences. 8. Senior management does not encourage VP’s and Senior Directors to talk to their team (or people in general), for example say hi in the hallway, hold your head up and not stare at a phone to avoid interaction with people.
