I have been working at Playworks full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Playful professionalism is genuinely valued. Continuous learning is valued organization-wide. There are opportunities to advancement.

    Cons

Some of the opportunities for advancement come up only seasonally and/or require people to move to a new location - but these things aren't unique to Playworks.

    Advice to Management

Keep helping us follow that North Star, especially in the times of transitions and adding new positions in the organization as we reach for our Aim.

    Pros

    Fun & you'll stay busy!

    Cons

I wish they could provide my students with transportation. That would make a big difference in my league participation.

    I worked at Playworks full-time

    Pros

Fun! Room for growth. If you love working with kids, this is a great opportunity. You can make your program your own and you are not stuck in an office all day.

    Cons

Long hours... If you're an Americorps member you get paid salary and the pay is not the best. Most of the day is spent outside, could be a good or bad thing (on the hot days) for some.

    Advice to Management

    Management is the best!

I worked at Playworks full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Playworks provides comprehensive training before placing coaches in the field. Professional development of staff members is a major component at the start of employment and for the duration of a school year. Coaches (program coordinators) also have a high level of autonomy when shaping their individual programs and guidance from supervisors is readily available when a coach is struggling with program direction or effectiveness.

    Cons

The autonomy stated in the pros section also comes with certain challenges, the primary challenge being the different personalities and work styles encountered among school staff. Playworks as an organization has a wonderful model to improve recess at schools, but it can be a major struggle for program coordinators to achieve buy-in from school staff members.

    Advice to Management

Work on making the program more affordable for a wider range of school communities. The cost of implementing is prohibitive for some of the most vulnerable school communities. Designing some sort of cost sharing model or fundraising effort within successful school programs to implement the program at another site.

I have been working at Playworks full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You get to be a kid every single day and spend time outside. The Playworks mission actually comes to life when Playworks enters a school and you get to leverage play to change school culture and develop leadership among 4th and 5th grade students. It's a fun place to work with great work/life balance AND our office has mandated recess time (how cool)

    Cons

Being outside in bad weather sometimes (really cold or rainy) and the fact that our coach position is only seasonal

    Advice to Management

    Sign on even more schools!
