I worked at Poets & Writers full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent online resources and information, dedicated staff, the magazine is well put-together with interviews and profiles of well-known and up-and-coming writers.

    Cons

There is little opportunity for advancement with entrenched management. The Executive Director is a micro-manager and out-of-touch with the concerns of employees.

    Advice to Management

When all of your employees in supervisory roles are white, and all of your employees of color are in support and assistant roles, that is a problem and a red flag.

I worked at Poets & Writers full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Creative, interesting people and opportunities to connect with others in the literary world. Schedules run like clockwork, so no last minute craziness or working overtime.

    Cons

Kind of old school and bureaucratic; not a lot of opportunities to grow. Work can be boring. Pay isn't great.

    Advice to Management

Consider how flexible schedules or better pay could help support your staffers that are also writers and artists.

I have been working at Poets & Writers full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Writing is creative work, original, one's own to do.

    Cons

Writing does not pay well for most of us, especially poets.

    Advice to Management

Publish our work, pay us for publishing our work, and pay us a living wage.
