I have been working at Porch full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I love working at Porch. In the past few years, I have seen us grow like crazy on a very bullish outlook, only to pivot, and then re-build on the basics. What has been great is how the company has transformed itself and come back out stronger and smarter. The engineering Org is composed of strong engineers who are passionate about technology, customers, and solving real-world problems. There’s a big emphasis on no...

    Advice to Management

I love how we are not afraid to butt heads against other industry giants. Let's keep aiming higher.

I worked at Porch full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Immediate bosses and leads do genuinely care about you. Lots of opportunities for growth, learning, and ownership. Plenty of unique projects available. Great comp and location!

    Cons

Same bosses and leads are hamstrung by upper management. Moving too fast for their own good leaving many good acquisitions and people behind.

    Advice to Management

Nobody is irreplaceable. Please remember the values that are put up on the wall, especially the ones talking about no ego and no jerks. People are leaving for a reason.

I have been working at Porch full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - great tech stack - lots of ownership and freedom of choice within teams - fairly diverse company, less so at exec levels - decent financial stability - pretty good benefits for a start up still seeking financial independence - support for learning and growth in concrete ways, like conferences - frequent and transparent all-hands's - not too many recurring meetings - great work/life balance - lots of interesting...

    Cons

    - neighborhood/location/earthquake building rating/no gender neutral bathroom - way too few conference rooms, many meetings held at open air conference tables and even those are hard to grab - office space is 100% open and very cluttered with cardboard boxes and various things. very loud, unorganized seating chart. - very bro-y culture, if you're not in the core cliques you don't know everything going on in the org...

    Advice to Management

Based on headcount, it feels like we're lagging behind in a few areas: - It seems like the senior leadership team's roles and impact should be better defined, especially on the product side. How come I've never met or heard the head of product speak, as a member of the product org? It feels like our direction is fragmented in terms of maturing the product. - HR. How did we *just* get a VP of People after having been...

I have been working at Porch full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Career: I've work for startups in the past where you have the ability to grow your career by wearing multiple hats at the company. This usually includes building web components, building services for the web to consume, then maybe some devops work to maintain the infrastructure to run in. At Porch, I've had the opportunity to 10x that by working in almost every part of the company. As long as you're engaged you will...

I have been working at Porch full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Porch is a great company to work as an engineer, as you will work in a fast-paced environment with lots of bleeding-edge technologies. As ICs, we are given a lot of autonomy and say in the technical direction of the company (both day-to-day and long-term). And thanks to a great CI/CD and logging/debugging toolset, build/deploy/rollback/debug is usually painless. A culture of testing and software craftsmanship means...

    Cons

Cross-department communication and planning has been a long-running problem, but has been improving. The food/snack situation is hit-or-miss (sometimes there's lots of food, sometimes there's almost nothing). Meeting culture is terrible, frankly (specifically in terms of logistics, see below).

    Advice to Management

To help improve the meeting culture, C-Suite/VPs/Directors need to set a better example to the rest of the company by starting meetings on time, ending meetings on time, and not stealing meeting rooms.

I have been working at Porch full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - Incredible opportunity to learn and advance - Able to work on cutting edge tech - Quality and functional agile development process - The engineering team and culture is top notch

    Cons

    - Opportunity and advancement can vary wildly based on what team you are placed on - Some technical teams can be bottlenecks and resistant to change

    Advice to Management

Insurance and 401k options could be better.

I have been working at Porch full-time for less than a year

    Pros

My favs: - I currently possess the most engineering freedom I have had in a while. My work is engaging and fulfilling. - Time off is very flexible. Other things that I like: - Porch's "No Jerks, No Egos" policy seems to creates a more positive environment than my previous employers. - They organize internal professional development workshops both for technical topics and personal improvement.

    Cons

    - The office space is the stereotypical tech open floor plan where we all wish we had a little bit more space. - The office space is often a little noisy for my taste.

    Advice to Management

No advice really. I think Porch has great management for engineering. I can't really comment on the others branches of management since I don't interact with them.

I have been working at Porch full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Culture: great, everyone is ready to help you. I've worked in 4+ different companies, large and small, folks in Porch are the most wonderful to work with. Tech is latest or very new. If you like the new tech, it is the place. Company also have a fairy strong culture of adopting new stuff. You will learn a LOT. Work/life balance is also the top.

    Cons

Hard/costly to park. But company have benefits to cover part of the parking fees.

I have been working at Porch full-time

    Pros

As an engineer, you get a massive amount of freedom on what and how to implement the requirements. Want to upgrade to newer tool than what you are working on now? Make the case, add a story and work on it in the next planned Sprint. Got a better way to do development for the company as a whole? You can offer up those suggestions and if you get win over enough people, the process will change. The people are all nice,...

I worked at Porch for less than a year

    Pros

    - Great people - Inviting - Tech forward - Comfortable work environment - Good restaurants close by - Open layout - Open door policy - The people at Porch were really nice and extremely talented. The values they hang on their wall are good ones to live by, and the employees seem to strive to do that each and every day.

    Cons

    - For engineers, the weekly/bi-weekly company meetings held by the CEO, seem a little unnecessary. It's great having the transparency in a company so that you understand how everything is working out with company progress and upcoming goals, but most of the information could be conveyed in an email. Engineering takes time, and every minute an engineer is in a meeting, they're not writing code for the next feature.
