Porch = A Solid Career Choice

Aug 1, 2020 - Senior Software Engineer in Seattle, WA
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      * The company adapted well to remote work after the COVID19 crisis began * Flexible with hours. Just get your work done and there aren't any issues. * Teams are solid. There are a number of highly skilled people at Porch. * Compensation is entirely dependent on the value you bring. You might have to push to get what you think you deserve, and they will listen. * People say the environment at Porch is toxic. The same can be said for so many tech companies. With this line of work comes a high level of responsibility and acuity. You want to make it - you distinguish yourself.

      Cons

      * Sometimes there is too much work to go around and excessive pressure will be placed on teams / individuals to get it done in effort to achieve milestones. Again, it is up to you to strike a balance between work/life in effort to make yourself a valued asset.

      WORST COMPANY EVER

      Pros

NONE. ZERO. ZILCH. NONE. ZERO. NADA

      Cons

Do not work for this company. It has shady business practices and treat their customers like dirt. They have zero empathy and steal money from customers regardless of the situation. This place is bound to fail.

      Fast paced, sometimes chaotic

      Pros

Porch is a great place to grow and learn. If you're a go-getter, you'll find a lot of people who are willing to cultivate your interests and passions and give you the space and opportunity to expand your skills.

      Cons

The organization isn't that transparent. They haven't always done a good job of committing to products and seeing them through. There's a lot of tech debt, and a lot of systems that nobody understands because the people that built them are gone.

      Pros

      - Porch has an uncanny ability to attract quality talent, and in turn, the people I worked with were kind, talented and driven. - As a nebulous organization without a distinct product, the opportunities to tackle unique challenges are abundant. - Most roles enjoy a degree of autonomy.

      Cons

      - As previously stated, Porch doesn't have a distinct product. M&A (i.e. buying income) keeps Porch afloat. - People are not valued. A round of layoffs in Q1 left the org at the "right size," until COVID-19 led to company-wide furloughs. With the partial furlough employees working twice as hard at half the pay, the full-furlough employees were no longer needed. Interesting. - There is a distinct drop-off in communication between C level and VP level. Leadership comes off as stilted and tone deaf. - Below market salary levels and major discrepancies in pay levels for employees with the same roles. - Porch laid off US based sales team in lieu of Mexico/Costa Rica based reps.

      GREAT SMART PEOPLE

Jul 16, 2020 - Generalist in Seattle, WA
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Porch deeply cares about its employees and Career growth opportunities are plentiful if you take advantage of all the resources at hand. Porch wants its employees to be invested in their work and to feel connected to its larger mission, even as we constantly evolve the path towards that mission. Growth can be accelerated in any given role if you choose to improve anything, as there is plenty low hanging fruit for you to go after.

      Cons

Porch's culture is demanding and fast paced. The greatest aspect of working at Porch is that everyone is very ambitious and very smart. The problem with this is that they all expect the very same of you. Holding a very high bar for excellence can certainly be demanding so it's important to make sure you're always carefully paying attention to your own personal work/life balance.
