    Positive Outlook

I worked at Port of Oakland as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Port of Oakland is a class act. The employees are more than polite, they are respectful. I hated to have to leave there. I hope to work there permanently one day.

    Cons

I really have nothing Con wise to say about this company here. So now I am just typing this so I can get to 20 words.

    Advice to Management

I personally found management to be mutually respectful and engaging with me. Even the CEO is a very nice man.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Port of Oakland full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people, great benefits, nice office location

    Cons

Senior management in both the Maritime and Aviation Divisions are under qualified for their positions, lack people and project management skills and are so stressed out that they don't have time to make good thoughtful decisions. Most of their staff hate them, and feel betrayed and used by them.

    Advice to Management

Consider replacing senior managers in these divisions.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Good organization that has made changes to update itself and retain good people. Good environment, not terribly progressive, but solid and good practices in place. One can advance if you put in the time.

    Cons

Antiquated and bureacratic, but that's to be expected in a quasi-government organization. Management is slow to change. Budget constraints limit programs, but again...government organization structure, not a lot of control over that.

    Advice to Management

Keep listening to younger colleagues who have progressive ideas and can make / influence positive changes. Keep up with technology to improve productivity.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

It was a wonderful experience and a lot of things to learn during the internship. The best thing to learn was how to use different accounts and to know how the data was

    Cons

There is not much to say about the cons. The positions are very limited and career growth opportunities are very slow. Small department and small operation.

    Advice to Management

The management should innovate and expand the business operation so that the community could get the benefit of the facility

    Pros

Port employees were encouraging through the whole internship program.

    Cons

For student interns, the maximum amount of hours capped at 20 hours per week.

    Advice to Management

Have specific assignments set out for interns ahead so that there is a steady flow of work.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Port of Oakland full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Motivated and (generally) friendly coworkers, great benefits and good public sector salaries. Current executive team has a positive outlook and is poised to be able to capitalize on opportunities.

    Cons

Lots of internal turmoil over the last few years, and current economic outlook is limited due to enormous debt burden from previous projects. Generally more business-like as compared to some government agencies, but still an independent department of the City of Oakland.

    Advice to Management

Still seems to be a major disconnect between the outlook and perspective (challenges and opportunities) as seen by senior team and those on the rank and file level.

    Pros

Well compensated employees; differing abilities for promotion depending on division; wide range of policy and economic challenges to tackle across revenue lines, which creates business opportunities.

    Cons

major financial issues have lead to massive personnel cutbacks; employees by and large very overworked; little recognition by senior management and directors on the day to day needs to keep the place running in a sustainable manner.

    Pros

Great benefits including medical, a pension (!!) . Salaries are excellent. This type of employer is becoming a relic unfortunately.

    Cons

The recently appointed senior management is terrible. They are incompetent in doing their jobs and are only interested in selling the public's valuable real estate and laying off staff to meet their budget. Rather than have any in house staff the senior management seems intent on contracting out all of the work. This leaves little room for technical growth for existing staff. I highly recommend not pursuing employment at the Port of Oakland, despite the great pay and benefits, because it is likely that in ten years there will barely be any in house staff left.

    Advice to Management

Do not just continue to sell off assets to make money. Run the organization like you are actually trying to run an organization.

I have been working at Port of Oakland as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

There is a lot of work for anyone who'd like to optimize procedures

    Cons

Nobody have been trained to the "new software" installed in 2009... we all discover new / odd things everyday.
