I have been working at Portico Benefit Services full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great benefits if you get then (I was contingent staff, but most coworkers talked about how great they are) Compentant staff. Callers are Lutheran pastors, so 85% of the calls are friendly, even on sensitive subjects.

    Cons

Dealing with Medicare or health benefits is not my cup of tea. With our switch of Medicare partner to Humana, members were upset about that.

I worked at Portico Benefit Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Benefits are nice and the work space meets the basic needs.

    Cons

Smells and feels like working in your grandma's living room (slow and old computers, lots of printing, no decent technology) without the flexibility, care, encouragement to develop, and ice cream bars that your grandma would provide.

    Advice to Management

Read culture code by Daniel Coyle.

I have been working at Portico Benefit Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great benefits, 10% company contribution to 403(b)

    Cons

Virtually no PTO offered, no sick time.

    Advice to Management

Actually manage your projects. Total chaos with a fear-based approach from the CFO = terrible work environment.

I have been working at Portico Benefit Services full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Specific to Portico, overall: -Generous benefit package -Contribution rate by employer to retirement account is unheard of in other companies -Staff are generally friendly and enjoyable to interact with

    Cons

Specific to the Customer Care Center: -Micromanaged to within an inch of your life -Lack of trust from management towards staff; top-down management style -Unable to hire or train new staff consistently, thereby putting constant additional strain on permanent staff members to overcompensate for these shortcomings -Hiring practice includes over-reliance on temps -Complete lack of follow-through where it comes to...

    Advice to Management

The company vision, particularly for the Customer Care Center, is very good. The majority of decisions are made with every attention to our members, their needs, their concerns. However, the management, workplace environment, and structure surrounding the employees in this department is at odds with this mission. There has not been enough investment in the Customer Care Advocate staff across almost all areas of development,...

I worked at Portico Benefit Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

There's an overall sense of community and genuinely wanting to help our members. There were all sorts of health initiatives and fun competitions company-wide and everyone seemed to get into them. Both of the supervisors I worked under were awesome as well.

    Cons

Upper management tends to sugarcoat things when it came to how the company was doing, but they were made aware of it (probably through the yearly employee survey) and seemed to be trying to improve.

I have been working at Portico Benefit Services full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great staff, great benefits. Good mission. Compensation is competitive.

    Cons

Nothing is done with information from annual employee survey. Suggestions are dismissed and unhappy employees are not listened to. Non-management staff is expected to follow values while managers regularly ignore them. Some areas have high (90%+) turnover but managers don't change. Upper management doesn't let lower levels of management make decisions or use their judgment. Several management-level employees are...
