I have been working at Portland Community College full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Faculty and academic programs in CTE are far better than what you'd expect at a community college; I'd say better than most universities for a fraction the cost. Institution has the right values, such as equity, inclusion and diversifying the work force. Professional development opportunities abound. Obvious care for students, who as a rule love the education they get. 'Real world' curricula leads to solid jobs for grads. Diversity within students, esp in age and experience, makes for rich classroom discussions. Union representation helps assure fairness in contracts. Benefits and PERS are decent. Sustainability is tantamount. A respected presence in the community with a strong vision for the future.

    Cons

Certain deans sleepwalk and are lousy communicators. Others know very little about some of the programs they oversee. Some faculty members check out and don't bother to stay current on teaching tactics or technology. Insufficient cross-departmental collaboration. Hiring processes take too long and seem overly skewed toward a sometimes-puzzling definition of diversity.

    Advice to Management

Bravo on the superb hire in President Mitsui. Hope the pending Dean hires can follow suit. Please keep up the good vibes of the past in the current negotiations, as COLA and fair pay really do matter.

I worked at Portland Community College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great environment, friendly co-workers, easy job, one of the best benefits in state

    Cons

Job is too easy after a while, not feeling challenged enough, hard to grow within the company, too many regulations to abide by.

    Advice to Management

Keep offering the great support for your employees as you already do, much appreciated

    Pros

Being a transcriber is a really great position. Coworkers are great, students are great, lots of training opportunities, much more.

    Cons

No employee benefits and very little hours. There have been terms when I have not even received a schedule.

I have been working at Portland Community College (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They care about their students and their employees.

    Cons

lack of transparency from leadership. A lot of red tape or just confusion about who is in charge of certain issues.

    Advice to Management

Get a better website. Students and staff can't find basic services they are looking for.

I worked at Portland Community College full-time

    Pros

    Benefits were good and affordable.

    Cons

Management at all levels in does not support AP level employees adequately. Despite HR hiring processes, nepotism is alive and well (a campus president's partner was hired over more qualified candidates). There are also a lot of interdepartmental power struggles that reduce overall efficiency and often put students in difficult situations.

I worked at Portland Community College part-time

    Pros

Teaching students and working with educated peers.

    Cons

Management seems to work against employees instead of with them. Withholding benefits, yearly reviews, and clearly have a loose system of rules that only apply in their favor.

    Advice to Management

Please look into a training system where managing through fear is elimated, and insirping the staff is.

I have been working at Portland Community College part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Friendly staff, students are great. Job is challenging and interesting. If you have a FT benefited AP/Management/Classified position, the benefits are really nice. Free classes at PCC and tuition stipends at other schools!

    Cons

Adjunct, casual, and part time employees are treated as disposable and replaceable. This is, of course, part of a larger problem with adjunct positions in the US. Another con is that being an adjunct instructor is kind of a dead end job here.

    Advice to Management

Decrease PT adjunct & casual positions, increase FT positions.
