    Pros

Clean plant and nice office setting. Managers and supervisors are pretty solid for the most part. The manufacturing site is in a good setting in Batavia with restaurants fairly close and a park about a mile down the street.

    Cons

Some leadership changes on the GM side. Upper management also completely turned over when I was there. They lost some good leaders. At that time, is was managed by a private equity company. It has since been sold to a company in the plastics closures industry. That is probably good for the employees as the owners likely understand the business and product better than the last owners.

I worked at Portola Packaging full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The production team members and staff that make this facility move are by far the best advantage to come to work every day!

    Cons

Corporate divisions outside of operations had a lot of influence, everyone knew how to run a plant when in reality their own agenda was being pushed without concern of the "whole"

    Advice to Management

Even though an autonomous site, no need for corporate involvement on every issue. Select issues and big picture assistance is what is required.

I worked at Portola Packaging full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

One of the best companies I've ever worked for. If you are focused and a hard worker you will do well. The GM of the Tolleson plant is a good man and a great GM.

    Cons

Budding union activity by unskilled labor group in the plant.

    Advice to Management

Stay committed to a union free environment.

I worked at Portola Packaging part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Was a great employer with a clear vision of its business goals. Employee involvement was a good part of it. Was able to shine by doing what I could do best and felt gratification and appreciation by contributing to the company’s success.

    Cons

Its business plan faltered. Too much attention is being placed on saving money instead of making profits, as well as sharing fairly with its employees who are the key to the company’s success. Not a socially responsible company. Your employees rely on you as much as you rely on them. Treat them as family. Portola is part if their family.

    Advice to Management

Please do not lose focus on attainable goals. Rely on your employees to improve upon your success. Their input is key to your success.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Work is self directed and good learning environment for manufacturing. The company teaches lean manufacturing. Company is very small in Canada.

    Cons

The company is small in Canada which reduces the ability to progress your career. Be prepared to move on quickly.

    Advice to Management

Many employees do not take vacation because they are concerned that others will "throw them under the bus" while they are gone. Change this mindset and encourage people to take vacation.
