I have been working at Powell Industries full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and services for employees.
Improved HR department in recent years.
Kind and competent employees at many levels of the business.
Cafes and recreational area in some facilities.
Afternoon shift and overnight shifts pay a percentage more (Manufacturing positons)

    Cons

Poor training program for all states of the business.
Safety programs are backed by a few good employees and many more that could care less.
Safety is ignored when convenient and disregrarded completely when busy but enforced with prejudice when an accident occurs.
Lack of communication between shifts, departments, supervisors, managers, engineers, and leads.
Most management plays into favoritism for promotions.
Poor equipment/machine maintenance. Constant blame game between managers, supervisors, leads, and employees.
Bad overall moral due to management.
Overall market value for most manufacturing positions is poor being 15 to 20 percent under market value

    Advice to Management

Better training for new hires and ongoing employees. For example, training people longer and with continuously updated training records, improved safety training for department specific tasks. Better communication at all levels of the business. Match pay rates to market values. Work to improve, strengthen, promote you employees rather then blame, belittle, and degrade them.

    Pros

Powell tries very hard to do the right thing, whether it is benefits for their employees or looking forward to the health of the company.

    Cons

The impact of the oil & gas industry has impacted the company greatly, which impacts R&D to stay competitive and the workforce. The management team has a big job ahead of them.

    Advice to Management

Powell is not the best, like other companies, to keep their employees abreast of the health of the company.

    Pros

Flexible hours; great environment; good people to work with

    Cons

No raise in salary; Going no where; they care for management and shareholders but do not care about regular employees; keep cutting benefits, laying people off

    Advice to Management

You should care about lower- and mid-level employees not just management and shareholders. I was working there for about a year and there was no potential of a raise.

    Limited career advancement.
    Weak senior management.
Good ole boy system it is not what you know but who you know.

    Advice to Management

Promote and hire people for what they know not who they know.

    Cons

Low pay for skilled workers, personality- not performance oriented, have to be a member of the good-old boy network to get ahead, some managers resistant to change

    Advice to Management

Be more open to change, work on quality issues, increase safety department staff, offer more opportunities for upward mobility
