I worked at Power & TEL full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Salary ok for a small company. Benefits are ok; could be a lot better. Location in relation to Midtown/downtown Memphis ok, Technical team get things resolved quickly. Should issues arise. CEO, CFO and chairman of the board works at location and are the nicest people.

    Cons

Micromanagement is an understatement. President at Memphis location is extremely rude. No one speaks just stare. Company praises company tenure but everyone is set in their ways. Warehouse has no adequate cooling system. Warehouse temps exceed 100 employees were still required to work with regular breaks (no add'l water breaks). No clear communication from upper management, won't know of issues until review time. Times are changing & company needs to become more aware of millennials& others NOT in Sales.

    Advice to Management

Learn ways to effectively communicate with staff. President needs effective leadership classes.

I worked at Power & TEL full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

They hired me when I had little experience.

    Cons

If you aren't in sales, your job is not important to the company as a whole. I did not work in sales and was denied any opportunity for advancement when I expressed no interest in becoming an account manager. Before I left they decided the best way to boost company moral was to put the rest of the company through sales training so we understand how a salesperson thinks. It did not go over well & they continued to lose people in all departments every week....particularly people under 40. Review process was very disorganized and frustrating. Managers didn't communicate problems with their staff until review time so they could use "major" but past issues as grounds for a bad review making them ineligible for a raise or consideration for other positions in the company. Since leaving P&T, I now realize they are stuck in the past in terms of salary & management style. They bank on people not realizing this. The majority of the company is people less than 10 years away from retirement so they are not concerned with changing anything.

    Advice to Management

Give the employees a chance to review their managers. Focus more on training managers & employee satisfaction. Stop putting salespeople on a pedestal. It breeds resentment from other departments & gives sales people a license to treat other departments poorly. Think about where the company will be in 10 years when the majority of the current staff retires.

I worked at Power & TEL full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Mostly friendly and laid back family-owned atmosphere means that it is relatively easy to get along. Mostly older staff ensures things move at a snail's pace in terms of change. These could be viewed as a negatives as well.

    Cons

Overall, very unorganized. There is a lack of clarity and clear communication from upper and mid management that means work is very frustrating at all levels. This also serves to destroy trust inside the organization. Many things are not delegated properly to mid and low-level staff, often leaving a bottleneck at upper management and a disenfranchised staff which is not trusted or empowered to make even the smallest of decisions. Micromanagement is alive and well here. Yuck!

    Advice to Management

Learn to build trust at all levels, be truly honest and open, and take care of your people FIRST so that they can focus on taking care of your customers instead of focusing mostly on internal politics. Having higher salaries and better perks are welcome, but that's not all. Giving new and old employees opportunities to grow and advance, builds value and keeps good people around. Instead, you are left with a mostly senior-aged staff which primarily stay or onboard to work the last 10 years of their career before retiring. These pre-retirees are not interested in change, improvement, or innovation. They are there to be mindless clerks, collect a paycheck and go home. I felt this was detrimental to the existence of the company and therefore my job. Wake up!

    Pros

Predictable, stable hours and stable company. Very fair benefits.

    Cons

Very low end salary. A sales person is not rewarded for producing for going above and beyond sales goals. Traditional company who does not know how to manage a younger workforce. History of gender wage gap.

    Advice to Management

Get with the times and if you are going to spend money on employee surveys, use them. Power & Tel will continue to lose young talent until salary, commission AND work environment become more in line with today's standard.

    Pros

family oriented company. steady job with nice people and predictable hours. good place for first or last job.

    Cons

Poor communication from management and between departments. About 10 people left in the last few weeks for better paying jobs and management is pretending like nothing changed and not communicating who is absorbing their responsibilities. employee evaluations feel rushed.

    Advice to Management

Little opportunity for advancement or raises leaves younger employees feeling under valued and frustrated.

family company that understands that family emergencies come up

    Cons

low salary, no room for advancement, company is very traditional and WILL NOT change how they run things. 6 people quit within the first 2 weeks of a month and no one batted an eye.

    Advice to Management

raise the salaries, don't micro-manage the sales team, work on employee retention, better benefits, make the work environment less stuffy

    Pros

Seems to be room for lateral movement if you want. Working hard means you keep your job.

    Cons

Working hard doesn't mean you get rewarded. Keeping your job is the reward. Work/life balance is miserable. Pays less than other companies in the area.

    Advice to Management

    Benefits are mediocre.

    Pros

Good stable company. Fiscally responsible. Great people. Some micro-management, but not awful. Great benefits. Decent salaries. Opportunities to take on different (mostly lateral) roles. If you work hard, good stable, reliable employer. Excellent HR support for employees.

    Cons

Small company, not a lot of vertical career opportunities. Could use more life/work balance. Not a lot of vacation, even with years of service. Don't value employee personal time.

    Advice to Management

Maintain the good work with benefits and HR support. Keep managing the money well. Adopt a more contemporary life/work balance strategy.
