I worked at Premera Blue Cross full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people makes this a really nice place to work. Pretty decent pay and benefits for outside of the City. No worries about parking... free parking in several lots. On campus cafes in each building with healthy choices.

    Cons

Continuous layoffs and reorgs. If shuffled from one dept to another, there is no other option but to either get used to it or leave (or be asked to leave). Seems that nearly every year right before the holidays there are layoffs... to perhaps get the upper management bigger bonuses??

    Advice to Management

Management seems to not have a real plan, just continuous reorgs and shuffling people around to see what works. Feels like the IT tail is wagging the dog. Is this an IT company selling healthcare or a healthcare company with an IT dept? It's time to make more sales instead of moving the shells around in the financial statements.... can't squeak much more out of operational expense savings.

I have been working at Premera Blue Cross full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The environment is very collaborative and the culture claims to care deeply about Lean Leadership practices. Where this is actually practiced, good things are happening.

    Cons

The company fails to train managers of people as well as managing the resulting issues. Good managers are far and few between, which can make the experience terrible. There is also a ruthless and cold attitude from the head of HR that the business matters more than the people.

    Advice to Management

Your greatest asset is your people. Train and value good managers of people. Good results will be easier to achieve once you fix this issue.

    Pros

Great campus, nice cafeteria, great co-workers. Very good benefits and opportunity for advancement along the way. The job itself was exciting, always work to be done.

    Cons

Very male dominated leadership teams. While opportunities to advance exist, there is a glass ceiling. Definitely need to be part of the good old boy network to really achieve your potential.

    Advice to Management

Consider the full potential of all employees, regardless of their background. You have missed out on some amazing talent by staying within your box of what good looks like.

I worked at Premera Blue Cross full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Nice campus, free parking, cafeteria on site, walking path behind campus, company desires to improve health care in our communities, education benefits, my managers provided fair feedback,

    Cons

Compay is in a state of change and it shows up in the company culture, in the last two years Premera has gradually laid off hundreds of employees (approx. 300-500)
Moving up in the company can be challenging
Culture and opportunies between departments can vary

    Advice to Management

Continue efforts towards transparency, continue work to increase and re-establish trust with your employees
