I worked at Premier Farnell full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good situation but bad communication from the management. Very good mentality from the staff and many events organised.

    Cons

Bad communication from the board to the group. Should be good to give more responsabilities to the local team.

    Advice to Management

Give more responsabilities to the local team instead of make a central team.

    Pros

    Provides lunch on the premises.

    Cons

Very poor training, then blames new hires for resulting performance.

    Advice to Management

It's your ship, run it as you wish.

I worked at Premier Farnell full-time

    Pros

Work-life balance is good, depending on your role. Chicago office is in a great location.

    Cons

UK-based management places little value in employees in other areas of the business, their strategies are weak at best, and it is an extremely negative place to work. Layoffs are abundant and egos are allowed to run wild.

I worked at Premier Farnell full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent people, good work/life balance. Plenty of opportunity to develop into greater roles within company

    Cons

Very dated systems and software. Revolving door upper management. Lack of consistency in market strategy.

    Advice to Management

What is strategy this week? Product focused, customer focused, sales focused? Pick one and stay with it long enough to effect growth. Invest in product and systems!

I worked at Premier Farnell (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The individuals in the Chicago office who actually worked, were fantastic.

    Cons

3 CEOs in less than a year, steady pattern of cut, cut, cut. Total lack of respect for non UK-based associates. Accountants running the place into the ground and refuse to invest to modernize their business. The brits were back-stabbing and spine-less. Teams would literally undermine their own groups if ideas didn't generate from Leeds, UK. Groups working against one another to claim ideas as their own, just a really horrible culture and lack of basic decency.

    Advice to Management

You're being acquired. As long as they shutter the UK office, the world will be a better place.

I worked at Premier Farnell (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It was decent place to grow for a while. Many smart and good people who are dedicated and doing a lot of great work. Opportunity to work with teams all around the globe and get to know how different cultures approach business problems.

    Cons

Mark Whiteling has left the business. Multiple failed business strategies have left the business floundering. Current Sr management focused on selling company. The current strategy is to cut teams beyond the bone in order to appear more profitable. Sales and finance are in charge of digital, but do not truly understand how to build and manage digital teams. Some digital leaders are not competent and/or only seek to promote themselves at the expense of others.

    Advice to Management

New management that takes over should be prepared to reinvest in digital teams capabilities. Do not let sales or finance manage the digital teams. Stop wasting time and resources on niche products which have failed to deliver market share and expected revenue and focus on being competitive with bread and butter products and providing great customer service. Add more warehouse space in APAC if you expect to truly grow there. Hire people who understand the difference between digital b2c and b2b as they are not the same.

    Pros

Good people. Great location in Chicago. Friendly atmosphere. Decent medical and vacation benefits. Good work /life balance. Opportunity for growth.

    Cons

Waves of lay-offs. Insecurity. A lot of good people were let go to cut cost. Others left on their own pursuing more stability.

    Advice to Management

Take better care of your employees. This is the key to the successful business. Business knowledge and experience are not replaceable.

    Pros

    Good people
    Beautiful office and great location

    Cons

Leadership not in touch with employees
Salaries not inline with roles or industry standards
Systems are out of date and no investment is being made to correct the challenges
When staff cuts come the US is hit hard and the UK stays in tack.

    Pros

Great people...a good place to learn about the electronics industry and to accumulate the skills that you will need to be successful. New management team in place and hopefully they will be able to right the ship.

    Cons

Big changes always taking place...the company is trying to find its footing in a changing and competitive industry...a lot of "right sizing" on. Not the most secure place to work. Micro-management is pervasive.

    Advice to Management

Hire great people and let them do great work. Improve the corporate culture and make it more fun and less stressful.

I worked at Premier Farnell full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great co-workers who care, but complete lack of direction. Newer US and APAC based leaders are strong. Good benefits for a business of this size.

    Cons

Unfortunately all the cons others have put on this site are true. The newer UK based leadership is completely incompetent and have egos so big they do not even realise how much they are damaging the business or the people who really want to turn the business around. It is always someone else's fault, finger pointing at its worst! Short sited and no focus on the future or people. They treat people as their least valuable asset which is a real problem.

    Advice to Management

Get some competent leaders in this business please!! Surely you can see through the egos in Leeds!
