I have been working at Premier, Inc. full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I like my boss very much. Also the company seems to do a great deal for onsite staff (I am remote).

    Cons

Premier has been on multiple top employer of the year lists in prior years so I anticipated great benefits and an employee focus. However the package was not impressive. PTO is less - sick time is awarded - all in all I've been underwhelmed. In addition job titles do not necessarily align with job responsibilities-I've been told this several times - makes the career ladder confusing.

    Advice to Management

Review employee benefits - to retain the caliber of staff (who keep Premier at the top of the list per KLAS) to attract talent you need to do better than the average. To retain your talent review benefits package - they are easily able to match or exceed benefits/opportunity consequently Premier is at risk of a slow drift of talent to its competitors.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Premier, Inc. full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Great Pay
     - Competitive Benefits
     - Remote (Field) employees have flexible hours (Culture of working from home on Fridays)
     - Recognized for contributing value to Member and Company
     - Opportunity for feeling high sense of accomplishment (Healthcare Industry)

    Cons

    - "Word Hard Play Hard" mentality may not be for some...
    - Recently became publicly traded, therefore pressure being placed on employees to have revenue focused goals/sales-oriented
    - Working in Healthcare can simply be a challenge (Federal policies, clinical complexities, ego's, etc.)

    Advice to Management

State the obvious - we're now under pressure to perform (revenue-wise) since becoming publicly traded. Hence, you may notice that many of our goals have shifted in kind.

I worked at Premier, Inc. full-time

    Pros

    Good people work there
Made huge strides in data analytics over time
    Compensation is good

    Cons

Unreasonable time demands placed on employees.
Management is insensitive to work/life balance.
Since going public, the hospitals are no longer partners, but a revenue stream.
Focus on changing healthcare is lost and bottom line is all that matters

    Advice to Management

You cannot manage the business by managing the numbers. Manage the customer and the numbers will be made.

I worked at Premier, Inc. full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good experience for people right out of college, good benefits (work from home, nice 401k match, vacation rolls over year to year, sports leagues, onsite fitness classes and activities), bonuses, good values (ethics and good mission)

    Cons

Low base salaries, a lot of red tape and top town dictation, very siloed product and team structure, too many required meetings (all staff, dept., weekly team, weekly 1:1, and other miscellaneous), bad culture since IPO

    Advice to Management

Cut down on meeting times, pay people what they deserve, cut down on middle/upper management so it's not like climbing mt. everest to be promoted

I have been working at Premier, Inc. as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Social atmosphere is pretty good and all of the employees seem generally interested in helping you improve.

    Cons

It seems like all of their training revolve around soft skills and nothing else, which comes off as a huge waste of time for those that already have soft skills.

Management, especially in the ITS department, went through a huge upheaval during my time there and it seems like no one really knows what's going on.

Pay is lower than average and nothing is stipend.

    Advice to Management

Cut some of the soft skills, increase the pay, get some structure if you really want to get and keep the interns you hire.

    Pros

Great culture, nice people, lots of perks, good salaries

    Cons

Recent acquisition of multiple companies has created a bit of an identity crisis, for a company that is still adjusting to being publicly traded. End result is a lot of trickle-down confusion, and no clear path as to strategy.

    Advice to Management

indecision is worse than no decision

I worked at Premier, Inc. full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits were above average, free parking. If you can avoid the poorly managed departments like the one I found myself in, the work culture appears to be excellent. Very good leadership at the top, but obviously a little bit out of touch with certain departments. Would rate higher if not for this.

    Cons

(Disclaimer: Aside from the disheveled state of affairs in HR mentioned by several other reviewers here, the Cons below do not seem to be pervasive throughout the company. This is based on my observations and speaking to others outside of my department.

If you find yourself working in a non-Java tech stack, there's a fairly good chance that these Cons below apply)

    - Managers thrown into positions where they are not needed, which disrupts overall team productivity and cohesion as they desperately scramble to validate their positions.

    - As a result of con above, lots of posturing and micro-management, which only stifles productivity and kills team morale.

    - Borderline verbal abusive behavior by middle management. Negative comments openly made during meetings towards team expectations and performance.

    - Non-technical people making technical decisions. Bringing in inadequately trained/skilled resources and not holding these individuals accountable when things inevitably go wrong.

    - Lots of hand-holding for these individuals that end up pulling down the rest of the team. No incentive to improve skill set.

    - Dissension among middle management and the lower ranks. Most afraid to voice opinions for fear of being "written up". (Yup, I said "written up". It actually happened.)

    - Implementing ineffective/out-of-date heavy-handed leadership/management techniques that have been proven to kill morale and productivity.

And then echoing what several others have already noted here: HR seems to be spinning out of control and therefore, not very effective. Witnessed reports of blatant policy violations being completely ignored..

    Advice to Management

Give your employees the space and tools they need to do what they're good at. Encourage learning and collaboration instead of getting in the way of it. Improve screening process when bringing in new talent. Hold people accountable for poor performance, not those who are identifying them as a problem. Brush up on modern leadership techniques. Take the plunge into Agile; there's a reason why it's so popular. Most of all, stop the nano-micro-management. No employee worth your investment would tolerate the conditions I witnessed. Advice is only good when not falling on narcissistic ears though...

    Pros

Great benefits, filled with diversity and good place to work if you want work life balance. Various activities for employees, options to learn more.

    Cons

Lack of good leaders and managers. Communication gap between various teams to work as a group. Lots of old timers in company who are not willing to learn new technology which is hurting companies growth overall and also discouraging those who really wants to learn something new. Lots of brown-noser in the company. Pay varies a lot. Too much work load on one person.

    Advice to Management

    None

I have been working at Premier, Inc. full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

In general, Premier is a solid place to work. Lots of great benefits and lots of room to advance. A place where folks want to retire from. Brilliant CEO who understands the business and is exciting to work for. One of a kind leader.

    Cons

ITS in general has recently come under new leadership in a CIO, which has greatly reduced all the support team(s) ability to service their customers (Premiers Employees) effectively with a variety of changes and extra work without increase staff. Almost all of the leadership under the CIO has left Premier and attrition is at an all time high.

    Advice to Management

Consider the opinions of your lower management instead of making decisions based what makes you look best.
