Pros
Staff members are ethical, smart and dedicated to covering their communities. The paper is gutsy and unafraid to challenge local authorities and fight for open records. Newsroom managers are reasonable about time off, and reporters are good about trading nights and weekends so it's possible to have a life outside of work. The paper is family-owned, so the owners have some loyalty to the paper itself, not just the profit it can bring.
Cons
A hiring freeze has left the paper without the reporters it needs to thoroughly cover everything that should be covered locally. Stories slip by us that shouldn't. Attrition in the editors' ranks lets more errors get by that would have been caught when we had more people to double-check pages. As of Jan. 2018, we could hire only part-time reporters; it's hard to hold on to experienced staff when you don't offer them benefits.
