I worked at Princess Cruise Lines as a contractor (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Free food, free accommodation, free travel. Meeting crew members and passengers from across the world. Live, work and play with all kinds of different friendly people. Some free time when ship is docked (only in certain departments) to explore the world.

    Cons

Still a corporation - the corporate politics still apply. Some people get homesick. Losing land-base connections easily. Unstable personnel rotations. Comparatively low salaries (***but also much less expenses). Company does not side with employees if there are passenger disputes. Little to no long term crew member benefits. Can be stressful knowing that you are also in charge of safety duties aboard.

    Advice to Management

    Match land-base salaries please.

    Pros

Benefits are ok but explained poorly and in a deceiving way, making you believe they were better

    Cons

Forget about promotions or salary increases, long hours, extra work not payed, never reconized, poor management

    Advice to Management

Same job same salary and same benefits should apply to all departments

I have been working at Princess Cruise Lines as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay is a little better than a musician. Single cabin, better food.

    Cons

The job itself is not a creative job with this cruise line. It has become a very secretarial type job. Music is only about 30 percent of the job. Most of your day is spent in the office filling out reports or doing the daily schedule, answering emails, coordinating rehearsals and events with production. There is an annoying amount of HR stuff to deal with.

    Advice to Management

This company should hire a music administrator for the job of doing all of the clerical work required and let the music manager position become a music director position dealing only with music and musicians performances.

    Pros

Benefits include concession cruises for employees and families, internal transfer as well as many development programs are available

    Cons

Salary is based on nationality, promotion is very slow, senior managment onboard aren't evaluated properly

    Advice to Management

360 surveys are necessary for onboard high-rank managment, as there is lots of harrassment

    Pros

The company is moving in the right direction, with the adoption of more modern business practices. If leadership continues in the right direction, there are exciting possibilities.

    Cons

The lack of a clear vision and strategy makes moving the business forward an incredibly slow process. The old-school hierarchical structure can be frustrating.

    Advice to Management

Provide a vision for the future, not just business updates.

I worked at Princess Cruise Lines as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

TRAVEL -- working aboard a cruise ship allows you to see places in the world you may never have even heard about. You get to work with people from over 60 different countries and learn about other cultures. You have the opportunity to prove yourself and advance based on your performance.

    Cons

Work is long days and very hard. Management is generally 4 month contracts but non-management is longer, up to 11 months and you work 7 days a week and up to 13 hours per day. Very little down time. Passengers can be rude and demanding -- or in reality, just a few of them can be very difficult, most are wonderful. But it only takes a few to make an already difficult work life that much more difficult.

Some management and leadership is very "old school" and can be disrespectful of crew.

    Advice to Management

Shipboard development of management and leadership, along with staff development would greatly enhance the shipboard experience

    Cons
