I have been working at Principal Financial Group as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Met with each of the company's Cheif Accounting Officers in groups of 5 to 8 for 1 hour & was able to ask them questions about their history & experience. Principal makes interns feel valued throughout their experience

    Cons

None, really. Interns are given every opportunity they wish for at Principal. Most departments are extremely flexible with working hours and time off for vacations.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing - after interning at Principal for the summer, I'm extremely excited to look for full-time opportunities in the future.

I worked at Principal Financial Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The intern program was very large, so I met a lot of people in my similar situation. They tried very hard to make sure I had work to do. Lots of company sponsored events for employees.

    Cons

Some interns I know didn't have much or anything to do for the entire summer.

    Advice to Management

Keep vetting your Intern leaders/mentors to make sure they are good leaders/mentors to the interns they have.

Invest more in competing with technology.

I worked at Principal Financial Group full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Principal is a global company and offers a variety of opportunities for individuals to work and travel internationally while residing a small city.

    Cons

Seniority and job titles are very important and are often the primary factor in promotions and assignments, rather than skills, performance or potential. Pay is often not competitive for like positions in the Des Moines market.

    Advice to Management

Do what you say you are going to do. If you want empowered employees and a flexible work environment, HR and leaders need to support and deliver that, not just "sell" the concept.

I have been working at Principal Financial Group (Less than a year)

    Pros

The wellness center is top notch. The equipment is very good.

    Cons

The investment return on investments are low compared to others. Management from the Mason City office has a difficulty time communicating globally. They come across as bullyies and degrading to locations outside their locations.

The office manager and assistant manager are extemely closed to convesation. If accepting a position find out all the management you will be involved with. There are many.

    Advice to Management

Communicate to each other globally and realize the value of your team.

I have been working at Principal Financial Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of room to move around
    Culture is improving
Great people work for this company

    Cons

Certain metrics for performance are outdated
Large company and very slow at change
So much "pork" for IT debt

    Advice to Management

High performance as an employee doesn't always equal great leadership skills as a manager

    Pros

    Some good leaders are there

    Cons

Your experience depends on your boss. If you have a crappy one, it will suck. If you have a good one, you're set. I had 10 bosses in 10 years. They like to move people around a lot.

    Advice to Management

Train your leaders to become decent human beings.
