I worked at Principal Hotel Company full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The group has a collection of nice properties, and offers a step on the career ladder for many people who may lack formal skills or training. The annual staff awards event is well organised (if you’re lucky/senior enough to be invited).

    Cons

As a member of the senior management team in a flagship property, I witnessed an industry, and company in crisis. I saw good staff leave high profile jobs for better pay and conditions stacking shelves in Sainsbury’s (not a joke).

I saw experienced elite hoteliers broken by the sheer grinding futility of coming to work for 12+ hours per day, only to have senior people openly undo their hard work in minutes.

Having come from outside the hospitality industry, I was disgusted to see how the most senior directors of the business treated their colleagues with utter contempt and repeatedly drive property managers into impossible dead ends with unclear expectations, zero communication, and laughable budgets.

The business remains viable solely off the backs of unpaid overtime worked by undervalued staff at every level, who are ignored by directors, who are at once, ignorant of the reality of their business, disinterested in how to modernise in the slightest way, and unwilling to engage in even the most cursory way with even senior managers, let alone team members. This is no secret in the business, but being as it is, many employees have no option but to stick it out due to limited career prospects elsewhere.

I have a wealth of multi-industry experience at senior level, and have literally never dared to imagine a business like this. I would not work here again, nor let anyone I know apply without the benefit of my advice.

    Advice to Management

Aside from advising that senior managers familiarise themselves with their own business to avoid their memos and missives sounding totally absurd (on the rare occasions they are sent), and encouraging the board of directors to have basic common decency to say hello to staff as they meet them, I would recommend an NED or consultant be empowered to conduct a review of the management structure, policies surrounding management sign off of hiring decisions and staff structures, and a review of corporate governance policy and practice.

To hope that a shift in pay policy for junior staff might take place would be like asking the Queen for an arm wrestle, so I won’t bother.

I worked at Principal Hotel Company part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Other waiters were friendly, pay was okay, location was lovely and had good links to transport.

    Cons

Management was not adequate to say the least, rota quite often came out 24 hours before they expected you to come in for a shift, the pay did not match the pressure managers and supervisors put you under, understaffed and a high staff turnover (I now understand why), kitchen staff absolutely horrible to the waiters - quite often heard vulgar comments from male kitchen staff about not just female waiters but female managers as well. Staff are not valued and definitely not respected as they should be.

I worked at Principal Hotel Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Lovely environment to work in
    Meals provided
    Bonus scheme

    Cons

Long hours with no overtime paid
    Low salary’s unless top management
Too many managers not enough staff

    Advice to Management

Going in at management level should be ok as treated better than staff below, read contract prior to accepting & request increased salary as budget will allow.

    Pros

The shifts are very flexible when you are part time you can pick which shifts you are available for on a weekly basis which is ideal for students.

    Cons

Late hour shifts. Some shifts don't finish until 4-5am which can be difficult if there is no public transport available going to your house at that time.

    Advice to Management

Performance appraisals, more training and communication with staff
