I have been working at ProAssurance full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It's a stable company with decent benefits.

    Cons

Too many cliques; not everyone held responsible for their own work and are NEVER corrected to do so; poor training practices; often times no training; entirely too many meetings of little importance; having to clock in (this is not a factory) and most of all NO COMMUNICATION. Nothing is EVER done to solve problems though management continues to ask for feedback. It has become a joke when asked for ideas/feedback, etc. You know it won't go any further. Limited career advancement unless you want to bounce from dept. to dept. and you still aren't guaranteed anything more.

    Advice to Management

Compensate all employees fairly and not because of who you know. If you are NOT in management or above you definitely get the short end of the stick even though you push out good quality work. Salary is horrible for what you are asked to do and the mentality is you should be grateful. You will continue to lose good employees with this mentality.

I have been working at ProAssurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Provides great product for a niche market. Stable company with great benefits. Company is good at giving back to the community.

    Cons

Traveling on weekends so it's difficult to have a work/life balance. The pay does not make up for working on the weekends.

I have been working at ProAssurance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Time off (20 pto days includes sick days), Work isn't difficult, Nice onsite gym, friendly people, relatively short day (7.5 hours), Good Health insurance.

    Cons

Employee stock purchasing plan is gone, HR is not transparent with decision making, new employee training is limited. Change isn't embraced.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your employees from the beginning. There are lots of employees that have been here for a while that would do fantastic in manager/supervisory roles. Just because someone has been here for a long time and has a lot of knowledge doesn't mean they are good managers or supervisors.

"Not All Employees are "Treated Fairly""

I worked at ProAssurance full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Financially solid company; generally good, competent co-workers.

    Cons

Does not live up to its Treated Fairly promise with all employees. Certain departments are headed by micro-managers who sorely and offensively lack management skills and respect for their employees. Leadership tells employees that, if they give their all, they will be rewarded, which might be true for many, if not most, departments. Unfortunately, the decency and fairness they claim does not exist in all departments. As a result some folks tragically fall through the cracks with no one in HR to lend a hand. But I think they are trying to address those shortcomings.

    Advice to Management

If you are not going to treat all employees fairly, please revisit your branding.

I worked at ProAssurance full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It is a financially stable mid-sized to large company with a convenient location and above-average benefits package where additional training or education are encouraged.

    Cons

Management doesn't promote the "team" environment and isn't very fair to all employees. Expectations are unreasonable when unrealistic constraints are in force. Compensation and salaries are probably at the low-end of average. Raises are very small and advancements are hard to secure unless you are in good with someone in control.

    Advice to Management

Encourage management to not micro-manage and restrain employee ideas or concerns. Treat all employees fairly and resolve conflict within each department and between departments. Adequately compensate employees for a job well done.

I worked at ProAssurance full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Company provided gym in Birmingham, Alabama location. - The company match toward employees 401k plan is the best thing about working at this company.

    Cons

    - Promotions are given on a "buddy system" basis no matter how long you work there or how qualified you are. Don't work here if you're seeking a career with advancement opportunities; or find a way into a clique that will enable that. If you're not "on board" with a high-schoolish atmosphere, your position will almost definitely be eliminated.
    - Employees are not treated fairly; management is verbally abusive and disrespectful; work expectations are set far beyond any reality set within a 37.5 hour work week.
    - Certain management teams present employees work to Senior Management, exclude employees from those presentations, and are promoted further from the results of employees hard work. If employees voice they're unhappy with being treated unfairly, they simply replace the employee (this is true for more employees than I can remember over the 10 years I worked here).

**Fair Warning: recruiters will not work with you if you're employed by this company; the company has active relationships with all local recruiters.

    Advice to Management

This comment space is pointless for this company; management honestly and sincerely do not care. The CEO stated during a company-wide meeting that if employees are unhappy, they should leave.
After working 70 hours a week for 10+ years (salaried for 37.5 hours), if I thought advice would make a difference I'd have several recommendations for management.

    Pros

Generous 401k, affordable benefits, great coworkers

    Cons

No career advancement, no appreciation of good employees, unfair salary and bonus structure

    Advice to Management

Pay your workers better. The salaries are a joke. Also, there is no value of the loyal and hardworking employees. Lots of new policies put in place over past two years were what drove me to leave. The promotion raises were a joke too, at 4%. Bonus structure was completely unfair. Some employees got more bonus and salary than others based on the relationship with their manager, not length of service or prior experience. Completely unfair and opposite of the company motto.

I worked at ProAssurance (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits and a good corporate atmosphere make this a good company to work for. They strive to treat customers and employees fairly.

    Cons

Your best bet to work well with this company is to work in corporate in Birmingham. Remote offices tend to get a little less attention and the treated fairly motto sometimes misses the mark.

    Advice to Management

Get a better handle on career advancement in ALL departments. Bets way to lose good talent is to not have a career path for them.
