I worked at Progress Rail, A Caterpillar Company full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good Benefits, I got a good bonus when I was there

    Cons

Good old boy syndrome, if your not one of the guys you will not advance.

    Advice to Management

Do some self reflection, just because you live in a small town does not mean you need to be small minded.

I worked at Progress Rail, A Caterpillar Company full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Good pay for specific jobs. Good benefits. Good job for a single guy.

    Cons

Positions picked seemingly arbitrarily independent of experience. Soul crushing overtime when convenient for the company, none when it’s not. 100% not family oriented. Treats all employees as disposable.

    Advice to Management

Stop playing the good old boy system with people who suck up to you and people transferred from former shop. If your good to your employees you will get better work and reliability.

I worked at Progress Rail, A Caterpillar Company full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good benefits and that is about it. This site requires that I write twenty words so I am obviously searching for something to say other than stay away unless you love to see favoritism and idiots in positions that they are completely unequipped to be in.

    Cons

Nepotism capital of the world. This company has put people in positions because they are friends or neighbors or they have some type of tie to the CEO. Certainly not based on skills or ability.

    Advice to Management

Quit hiring and holding onto idiots because they tell you what you want to hear.

I worked at Progress Rail, A Caterpillar Company full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Excellent place to break into the locomotive field in a big way. Good pay and good benefits. Overtime for hourly staff. Lots of opportunity to learn. Management is pretty good about saving what jobs they can when they need to reduce staff.

    Cons

50-82 hours per week mandatory. Not enough previous rail experience in new salaried staff results in poor support. Poor vision for process improvement. Very bad about giving only lip service to quality and process improvement. Cyclical nature of business creates layoffs sometimes. Quality and process controls get scuttled by management needing to get stuff out the door.

    Advice to Management

Seperate quality from production to avoid conflict of interest. You will never get this business to be efficient enough to be proffitable until you properly establish good production and quality processes. That requires you to experience growing pains you should have experienced in your first 3 years but you were too busy learning what locomotives were. Who could blame you.
