I worked at Promega as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexibility to learn about different parts of the company. Most work has good guidance from engineering staff.

    Cons

Was required to work on alot of spare parts lists and not learn actual engineering skills.

    Advice to Management

    Give interns more responsibility.

I have been working at Promega full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Promega is really making an effort to ensure we are the best we can be as people, professionals, community members, etc. The programs and focus around ESI (emotional and social intelligence) has been life changing for me and many others in the organization.

    Cons

Walking between buildings on the Madison campus in the winter can be a challenge.

    Advice to Management

Take all of the opportunities you can to get to know the people you work with and who for you. They are our greatest asset!

    Pros

The corporate culture values employees. Life work balance, plenty of opportunities to grow and develop in areas you like, although this doesn't always mean you will climb the promotion ladder.

    Cons

Upper level management is isolated with respect to the rest of the company, they seem to have a disconnect with what really grows Promega, consistent, high quality, products.

    Advice to Management

    Stay engaged

    Pros

+ People are extremely welcoming, positive atmosphere
    + Very flexible work schedule
+ Interesting work for those who like the sciences
    + The *best* perks/benefits
    + Room for professional growth
+ Not a "one and done" interview process
+ The Promega "way" is very positive/development-focused
    + Campus-type feel
+ Gorgeous property, if that's your thing

    Cons

    - Interview process can be lengthy, but worth it in my opinion
    - Pay could be better
    - Expensive neighborhood if you plan on living close

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. I have not met a company that offers so much to their employees, and I hope that they keep listening to their employees.

I have been working at Promega full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Many friendly people. Good facilities. Good work life balance. Great cafeteria.

    Cons

Management (particularly in R&D) is selected and promoted on the basis of reinforcing their management's (frequently ill considered) biases and desires. Many managers and directors in R&D show little regard for the science, or the scientists who try to speak up for it. Scientists who think and operate independently are being weeded out by the R&D program. People most knowledgeable about the science are stuck in a permanent 'underclass'. Many of the managers in R&D are maintaining their position through fear and intimidation of the promising scientists that they encounter. Too many of the best scientists in the department refuse to offer their ideas to help, since they can never benefit from doing so. Too many good scientists have left, or were pushed out by this management. Look up 'mushroom management' to get a sense. Difficulties in recruitment stem from applicants reading online reviews. I have tried to recruit friends (who were great scientists) to the company, and they declined on the basis of our reputation.

    Advice to Management

There are deep problems within the R&D program. The VP of R&D is aware of them, as is HR. There is no advice I can give better than this: Start taking the HR/management situation in R&D seriously. Imagine that the performance of the department might stem from how people are treated. Identify the managers who have maintained their positions through fear, intimidation, and retaliation against their critics. Consider applying Code of Conduct to these individuals.

    Pros

Really innovative products. The R&D group is continuously innovating new products.

    Cons

Privately held company, not much specialization among employees, and not much process around HR decision making.

    Advice to Management

    Implement more effective processes.

I have been working at Promega full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Beautiful campus, fantastic wellness center, informal culture. Opportunities for growth and projects depend on your role and your boss. Decent benefits, pay is low in many areas. Some managers are truly the most fantastic people you will ever know.

    Cons

Company is lacking vision and direction. Promega wants to be in every space, so there is a lot of investment in many different areas to gather a fraction of the market. This means huge numbers of projects. Some areas of the company are grossly understaffed.

Company values airplanes over employees and functioning equipment.

Some managers are autocratic, which has resulted in loss of good talent. The attitude is that everyone can be replaced. HR is powerless.

    Advice to Management

Practice what you preach about valuing and growing employees. Top down, power and control managers are destructive. You are losing, and will continue to lose, good people.

I have been working at Promega full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Promega does offer a creative work environment depending on the department that you work in. There are opportunities to learn different things to spread out repetitive tasks. The facilities are very nice and there are many places to work out and move around. The health insurance allows for a wide range of doctors.

    Cons

Promega does not offer a highly competitive wage and doesn't give you many options for trying to negotiate a better salary when you already work for them. Any real wage increases come from promotions only. They generally offer the standard 3% average raise for each department so in order to get a raise higher than 3%, someone else has to get a raise lower than 3%. The politics are also incredibly strange and it is one of the only places that I've encountered in Biotech that retains its workforce for 15, 20 even 30 years. While this may seem like a good thing, it actually stifles innovation and tends to just make people cling to outdated procedures because that's the way they've always done it. Some managers are also very willing to throw their employees under the bus if it suits their purpose. It's more common than it should be, but isn't endemic to any particular department.

    Advice to Management

Promega also offers self-insured health insurance for about 700 employees, which means that the pool of people is too small for surprise medical problems not to be a cost burden that gets rolled over into the employee's premiums next year. The self-insurance model may have sounded like a good idea, but we just don't have enough employees to make it worth-while. It's also strange that a company of Promega's size has at least 3 if not 4 business airplanes as well as an airplane hanger and so many pilots on the payroll. Having so many expenses of this sort while offering lackluster compensation packages hurts morale and makes employees feel under-appreciated.
