    Pros

Really innovative products. The R&D group is continuously innovating new products.

    Cons

Privately held company, not much specialization among employees, and not much process around HR decision making.

    Advice to Management

    Implement more effective processes.

I have been working at Promega full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Beautiful campus, fantastic wellness center, informal culture. Opportunities for growth and projects depend on your role and your boss. Decent benefits, pay is low in many areas. Some managers are truly the most fantastic people you will ever know.

    Cons

Company is lacking vision and direction. Promega wants to be in every space, so there is a lot of investment in many different areas to gather a fraction of the market. This means huge numbers of projects. Some areas of the company are grossly understaffed.

Company values airplanes over employees and functioning equipment.

Some managers are autocratic, which has resulted in loss of good talent. The attitude is that everyone can be replaced. HR is powerless.

    Advice to Management

Practice what you preach about valuing and growing employees. Top down, power and control managers are destructive. You are losing, and will continue to lose, good people.

I have been working at Promega full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Promega does offer a creative work environment depending on the department that you work in. There are opportunities to learn different things to spread out repetitive tasks. The facilities are very nice and there are many places to work out and move around. The health insurance allows for a wide range of doctors.

    Cons

Promega does not offer a highly competitive wage and doesn't give you many options for trying to negotiate a better salary when you already work for them. Any real wage increases come from promotions only. They generally offer the standard 3% average raise for each department so in order to get a raise higher than 3%, someone else has to get a raise lower than 3%. The politics are also incredibly strange and it is one of the only places that I've encountered in Biotech that retains its workforce for 15, 20 even 30 years. While this may seem like a good thing, it actually stifles innovation and tends to just make people cling to outdated procedures because that's the way they've always done it. Some managers are also very willing to throw their employees under the bus if it suits their purpose. It's more common than it should be, but isn't endemic to any particular department.

    Advice to Management

Promega also offers self-insured health insurance for about 700 employees, which means that the pool of people is too small for surprise medical problems not to be a cost burden that gets rolled over into the employee's premiums next year. The self-insurance model may have sounded like a good idea, but we just don't have enough employees to make it worth-while. It's also strange that a company of Promega's size has at least 3 if not 4 business airplanes as well as an airplane hanger and so many pilots on the payroll. Having so many expenses of this sort while offering lackluster compensation packages hurts morale and makes employees feel under-appreciated.

I have been working at Promega (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Lots of on-the-job perks. Good benefits. Care about health. Change is constant.

    Cons

Silos. Medium sized company that still operates like a small company. No clear business goals/objectives communicated to employees.

    Advice to Management

You have a lot of employees who have stagnated in their position and do not keep up with the times and/or technology. Make sure you encourage educational advancement within positions across the whole company (not just IT).

    I worked at Promega full-time

    Pros

Great environment and great people. The culture at Promega is fun and inviting. You will make lots of new friends.

    Cons

Although a work/life balance is preached, it doesn't seem to apply to certain departments. The pay rate is average and hard to entice quality new hires.

I have been working at Promega full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I've worked at Promega for 25 years, and still love my job. There are lots of health and wellness benefits, excellent workout facilities, challenging research, and gorgeous buildings and landscaping. Very enthusiastic employees, great work/life balance, and good corporate culture.

    Cons

Fairly flat structure so there's not a lot of room for promotion. If you don't have a PhD, opportunities are more limited.

    I worked at Promega full-time

    Pros

The hours are very flexible. Most people don't work an entire 40 hour week.

    Cons

The pay is low, and the raises are terrible. When you advance they base your raise on the average of that level, regardless of how long people on that level have been with the company. It's frustrating to see the CEO spend millions on art, landscaping, planes and trips to party; all the while getting paid a terribly low salary to make the products he uses to fund his image.

There's no accountability; poor performers are protected by poor managers. You'll often hear "that's not my job" coming form departments who's responsibility is exactly what you're trying to get out of them.

Managers avoid innovation because they don't want to take chances that something might not work, so they just tow the line for terrible ideas coming from their managers and directors. It's completely a top down company.

    Advice to Management

They don't want advice, they've been working at Promega so long they're the experts on everything Promega. It's a shame they don't have anyone running the place with a broad range of industry experience.
