I worked at Protective Life (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent opportunity for advancement if hard working, quick learner, team player, smart.

    Cons

Upper management sometimes misses opportunities to help middle management become better managers overall.

I have been working at Protective Life full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great gym, friendly people, relaxed laid back culture. Great location - you can leave the place and go walking or running on Jemison trail, a beautiful trail beside a creek. They have an onsite nurse, dietitian, and counselor. The organization seems to try to do the right thing. A great place to stay for a long time if you find the right job.

    Cons

Not very performance driven, traditional. The longer you have been there the more complacent you are and a lot of people have been there a LONG time. Get in the right department though, that is in line with your thinking and goals and it will be great!

    Advice to Management

I feel like the middle managers tend to be the problem. They are rooted in their traditional ways and are not very flexible with the new generation that is coming in. They don't seem to have as much of a problem with executives or newer staff.

    Pros

Intern program is across the whole company. Great opportunity to meet seniors leaders and show how you work as a team in the group project.

    Cons

Most interns are in different departments, which makes it hard to equalize what every intern learns. Vacation time is really up to your manager.

    Advice to Management

Bring on more out of state interns to Birmingham. Improve the group project with more direction and more employee interaction.

I have been working at Protective Life full-time

    Pros

It is a team atmosphere within the IT Department. The IT Leadership is engaged with workers and does a good job sharing the company goals and priorities. There is a good investment in technology. They are willing to do things the right way. The Senior Leadership is transparent with the leaders of the company.

    Cons

Can be a fast paced environment with shifting priorities. Although there is good investment in technology there are some departments that are expected to run lean.

    Advice to Management

Continue to be transparent with your leaders and encourage feedback from the employees through the employee feedback program.

    Pros

Family atmosphere and work ethics. The technology group does a great job of integrating with the business needs and delivers.

    Cons

I can't really think of any cons. They have a café, work out center, walking paths onsite. They provide for their employees

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work and continue empowering both your employees and contractors.
