I have been working at Providence Health & Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Highly mission-oriented organization Excellent pay and benefits (based on system office experience) Great opportunities for growth and development Leaders in the Director/Manager levels trust and believe in their staff The best work/life balance I've ever experienced in a company

    Cons

Organizational strategy seems to be headed in the wrong direction Executive leadership seems to be too focused on short-term Cumbersome corporate structure that makes innovation and spread and adoption of best practices difficult Communication throughout the organization is very poor

    Advice to Management

Innovate. In the words of Einstein, we can't solve problems with the same thinking we used when we created them. The healthcare industry is in a tough spot, but simply complaining about lack of reimbursement when you don't necessarily invest in the best ideas to begin with doesn't help anyone. Grow, merge, acquire is not a new approach and it is not the right approach when you don't have your house in order to begin... with and it's leading to a poor culture for employees and moving away from Mission. Go back to the basics of providing quality healthcare and focus on prevention and building healthier communities as a way to reduce costs in a sustainable way rather than building up massive internal corporate structures then suddenly cutting all those jobs just to do the same thing again a couple years later. There are many, many highly Mission-driven folks with good ideas in the organization, use that knowledge and dedication.

I have been working at Providence Health & Services full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good benefits, great people, excellent patient care, community outreach and relationships. While the religious aspect can be off-putting, it's not necessary to be Catholic or even affiliated with a religion to work here. The Catholic values for the most part are a positive influence on how the organization approaches patients and the communities we serve.

    Cons

Moving more toward a corporate environment and away from some of the long-standing core values and mission. Starting to put less importance on employees and more on the bottom line. Quality of patient care is still very much a top priority, but employees are not quite as high on the list as we used to be.

    Advice to Management

Make it about the people. Bottom lines are important, but it seems like there is enough evidence showing that if you take care of people, the bottom line doesn't become an issue.

    Pros

Great people to work with, some of the best

    Cons

The company doesn't know how to manage itself, it is too big and there are not enough executives with experience to handle the higher level strategy.

I worked at Providence Health & Services full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Lots of good people with good hearts.

    Cons

Most all of the current management has NEVER run an organization as large as it is now and just do not have the talent or experience to do so. Some very good people have left and who can blame them. They try to keep the merged families happy but that just makes top heaviness and VERY unclear direction to rank and file staff. Senior leaders push their inability to confront or settle issue with their peers down to... the middle mgt. and senior staff level to fight out. Lack of courage, boo!

    Advice to Management

Reorganize and trim. There are over 80 positions with the word "Chief" in the title. Way too many chief's and not enough well thought out Indian roles
