I worked at Public Agenda (More than 8 years)
Interesting work, worthy cause, strong benefits
Poor management, highly political, increasingly irrelevant
Public Agenda is typically comprised of a very smart group of people who are for the most part charitably motivated.
The management is quite dysfunctional and communications could use major improvement. The current style seems to treat employees as interchangeable widgets, despite the fact that this is a service organizations.
Really good working environment, Helpful and friendly co-workers. Can a learn lot from this company as it does lots of interesting projects.
Not so great if you want to grow your career.
I worked at Public Agenda full-time
Beyond public engagement staff, a position at Public Agenda is a fairly easy job.
Staff largely keep to themselves so there is very little collaborative work nor camaraderie. The leader of the org is deeply insecure and projects that out to the org's employees. As one of only a few employees of color at the org, it was disheartening to see that people of color are relegated to largely administrative roles and are treated subordinately.
Advice to Management
Diversify at higher levels! Replace the president of the organization with someone who has a strong vision and isn't consumed with his own image and money.
PA does exciting, important work. There are often a few projects going on at one time, so it is hard to get bored. In addition the small size of the organizations allows people to learn how to handle many aspects of a project you might not in larger organizations.
For some, a small organization might not work, and the workload could be a bit much if you don't have prior experience.
