    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Public Company Accounting Oversight Board full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Warm, friendly, inviting place to work. Mission is important, company is growing, workloads are reasonable, flexible schedules, and pay/benefits are very good. Great location on K Street is enhanced by telecommuting/scheduling flexibility. I am glad I joined PCAOB. Much better than the Big 4 - I got to use all of my (1st year) 7 weeks PTO!

    Cons

The organization is only ten years old and has had some growing pains, but I see leadership making significant changes that could easily transform this place into a great place to work.

    Advice to Management

Keep asking employees questions and listening to employee responses. Keep making changes to improve based on what you hear.

    Pros

Work with heavily experienced professionals/CPAs; adequate time provided to perform deep dive reviews into audit and accounting issues; travel to interesting cities in U.S. and internationally; opportunity to become familiar with and evaluate differences in audit methodologies across the large CPA firms; flexible work hours

    Cons

Travel can be demanding at times; expect 20% to 35% travel each year; no retirement plan (except for 401k plan)--PCAOB matches 401k contributions but you don't have the same level of retirement security as do partners at the large firms.

    Advice to Management

    None--Great place to work

    Pros

The mission of the PCAOB is worth while. The 6 weeks personal time off (PTO covers sick and vacation) from day one and the 100% matching of 401k contributions up to 7% are all great.

    Cons

Political snakepit. Mid/Senior level hires focused on themselves and not interested in any type of career development; Management is not to be trusted and there are way too many people focused on themselves and their own careers than in the mission they are tasked with achieving. If PCAOB was the center of one of their own 'reviews' they would fail.

    Pros

Mission, Professionalism of many staff at the mid to senior levels is outstanding. Hiring mid-career level professionals has many benefits in that most people are there because they believe in the mission of the company and want to make a positive difference.

    Cons

Political, Corporate culture is one of mistrust, poor Executive Management in the Operations and IT team. When a company that is charged with ensuring integrity in other companies could not pass the same level of scrutiny itself, it is time for an overhaul of Executive Management. Rules are broken, money is wasted, contracts are not created in the best interest of the company. Incredible amount of inappropriate expenditures in IT and Operations teams. Political agenda of some allowed to drive corporate decisions.

    Advice to Management

    Audit IT contracts and budgets.

    Pros

Pay and benefits are great. The job is pretty low stress even when there is a lot to do.

    Cons

Not a lot room for growth. If you're not an inspector, there are almost no opportunities for technical training.
