I have been working at Puget Sound Energy as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people working at PSE are dedicated to make sure the electricity stays on and the gas flows where it needs to go. If an outage occurs, the whole company is aware and responds.

    Cons

    Can't really think of any

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work

I worked at Puget Sound Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very good health benefits and low pressure in general. The stress comes when you have to battle with other departments to get things done.

    Cons

Have to be on storm duty (supposedly voluntary, but not sure what happens if you decline too often). A lot of office politics (it's everywhere, but pretty bad here).

    Advice to Management

Show empathy to the employees and demonstrate that you are working with them to resolve endemic issues.

I have been working at Puget Sound Energy (More than 8 years)

    Pros

CEO Kimberly Harris and executive leadership are driving culture change toward a more data-driven and effective organization. I think the CEO is smart and strong and holds sincere values about transparency, employee engagement and safety.

    Cons

For every effort at culture change, there is backlash and resistance. The middle management level seems very political. There is plenty of work to go around, but the power games and turf wars are exhausting.

    Advice to Management

Culture change needs to happen within the management level. Silos should be broken down vertically as well as laterally. Cultivate and act on genuine respect for the professionals (below management level) and truly empower them to lead. Stop fighting over money and make it work.

I have been working at Puget Sound Energy full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Work life balance is strong here, for the most part. Most people are friendly and genuine in the lower ranks of the organization. I have met some really great people here. Benefits are pretty good though getting worse for newer employees.

    Cons

Fire drills are constant. Change is preached but politics drive the organization. Not many inspiring leaders to look up to, more just managers. Things move really slow, especially those with any innovative element. A culture of fear exists in some departments.

    Advice to Management

Do a better job on people development. The company has invested a lot in it but I think for the most part it's superficial. You can only go so far with classes on how to deal with change.

I have been working at Puget Sound Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

People are great, creative and smart. They truly have the customers' best interests at heart and as a group can and do move the world when there are impacts to the customer.

    Cons

Fundamental processes are broken across the organization; lots of resistance to change and implementation of new technologies (we've always done it this way, why change now), a lot of cronisim

I have been working at Puget Sound Energy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great employees who care about each other. A lot of focus at the employee level on giving our customers outstanding service...it is nice to work with people who care about what they do for the customers. Pretty friendly and casual work environment. OK pay and pretty good benefits. It is nice to work for a company that provides an essential public need (as opposed to making widgets).

    Cons

The company is changing without a plan. Our new CEO has vision, but doesn't know how to implement it with her management team. Many of the directors and managers have only worked here and can't handle change so it becomes chaos for the majority of the employees. Alternatively, they are from other industries (Starbucks, Microsoft, etc.) and don't understand the unique nature of running a utility. It is constant chaos and "flavor of the week" around here and the employee and customer suffer.

We have become more of an IT company and less of a hands-on utility. This used to be like a big family, but we have had so many retirements and so many new people coming in (who don't always stay more than a few years) that the family feeling is going away.

    Advice to Management

Take a minute to breath. Running a utility is not rocket science. We have no competition and a captive customer base. Let's focus on providing a good product to our customer and not having constant fire drills by leaders who are in over their heads.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Puget Sound Energy full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits, work life balance and location. PSE is also a leader in green energy, especially wind power, and actively supports the community.

    Cons

Used to be a good company to work for, but has become very "corporate", cold and political under Kimberley's leadership. PSE is working hard to become more customer service focused, which is a good thing; trouble is everything else is falling to the wayside starting with the employees. Reorganizations are common and many dedicated and well-respected employees, managers and senior leaders have either left, "retired" or been laid off. Transparency is non-existent and is declining rapidly.

    Advice to Management

Don't forget about your employees. While it's nice to strive for JD Power recognition, don't do it at all costs and risk alienating your remaining employees,

  10. "I've found PSE to be a good place to work: great people who care about serving customers."

    Pros

PSE provides an essential service, and employees are committed to keeping the energy flowing.
The company has high ethical standards.
    It treats people well.
It has good leadership and generally chooses good people for leadership roles. The new CEO, Kimberly Harris, really encourages transparency and open communication.

    Cons

Some customers can't stand the fact that they have no choice of utility, so they have little patience for power outages or bills they think are too high.
Turnover among the better jobs is low, and people often spend an entire career here, so advancement may be slower than in other large companies.

    Advice to Management

Continue to have the courage to embrace change and trust the judgment of the people who report to you.

    Pros

Great people in my group. There are opportunities to work on projects outside your department.
    Benefits. Location.

    Cons

Some politics in how people are promoted. Often times people are told they have a job before it is even posted.
Management is hit and miss. There are some real down to earth great managers and then there are those who use the steamroll approach with little regard for casualties.
Often times management asks for feedback and then doesn nothing with the feedback. It is as if they are checking a box "done" with no intent to make process improvements.
Took raises away from all staff in 2010 and probably no bonus in 2011.
Some senior level mang. are very innappropriate.

    Advice to Management

Reinstate raises. When you ask for feedback listen and do something with the feedback. Review hiring practices with a little more scrutiny, especially internal candidates.
