I worked at Puget Sound Energy full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

*Relative to other companies, comparatively excellent medical benefits, retirement and PTO program, solid pay * Many very high paying jobs available for people without college degrees * If you demonstrate high capability, you can move up from the entry level jobs and it is relatively easy (and strongly encouraged) to move sideways and broaden your experience *People here truly want to do right by the customer and the...

    Cons

*Haves and have nots: Some groups seems to have strong access to resources while others operate in an environment of extreme scarcity... no fun if you are in the later. *Leadership mixed. Some very talented, high integrity leaders and also still a fair amount of folks who are great doers but not so great leaders. *Despite much attention to the matter, very siloed still. * Superficially polite, passive aggressive...

    Advice to Management

    * Greater prioritization and focus on sustainment. Pick just a few things to focus on, and really, really nail those things. * You must be impeccable in walking your talk in a very overt and authentic way. *Focus much more on how you need to change and behave and relatively less on how you want everybody else to change. It needs to start at the top.

I worked at Puget Sound Energy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

For non union, competitive salary, good benefits and PTO. Annual bonus if the company does well to their benchmarks. Management making concerted effort to provide input with regular 1:1 meetings. Ability to work from home as agreed by the team and managers.

    Cons

Watch out for reviews, even when a mistake is directed by a manager, don't expect them to take responsibility. If someone provides an 'opportunity for improvement' it will be reflected and used against you to reduce your score for bonus and merit raise.

    Advice to Management

You are doing the right things to comply with the laws. The subject matter experts are overloaded and bringing in contract help is only a temporary stop-gap. Consider putting in place a reporting mechanism to report bully managers.

I have been working at Puget Sound Energy full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Most of the employees really care about taking care of the utility customers and there are some amazingly dedicated and talented people here that could probably make more money elsewhere. People seem to get very energized about the mission of providing gas and electricity to western Washington. PSE is fairly progressive about recognizing that the region is becoming a tough place to live and work (housing and traffic)....

    Cons

Very top heavy. Supervisors, and managers make most of the decisions that make or break the company...not the directors or VP's. The Director level (one step above manager) is like high school - very much a clique that protects each other. Their compensation package is different than the rest of the company and their motivation is to not rock the boat and lose their positions - hence most decisions are actually...

    Advice to Management

Recognize the people who are customer facing and dealing with the company's challenges every day. Your VP's and Directors are self-protecting and out of touch.

I worked at Puget Sound Energy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Very good health benefits and low pressure in general. The stress comes when you have to battle with other departments to get things done.

    Cons

Have to be on storm duty (supposedly voluntary, but not sure what happens if you decline too often). A lot of office politics (it's everywhere, but pretty bad here).

    Advice to Management

Show empathy to the employees and demonstrate that you are working with them to resolve endemic issues.

    Pros

Coworkers are great; Office space is nice. Lots of interesting problems to solve.

    Cons

The officer/director team is compromising ethics and core business capabilities to make a buck.

    Advice to Management

    Re-evaluate your values.

I worked at Puget Sound Energy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Was a place where integrity and ability were highly rated and employees were really valued.

    Cons

PSE is now in a "Penny wise and Pound foolish" mode. They will make immediate cuts in expenses with no consideration for the future, and loyalty now means nothing

    Advice to Management

Management used to be concerned about ranking high in the best places to work. Get back to it!!!!

I have been working at Puget Sound Energy for more than 8 years

    Pros

CEO Kimberly Harris and executive leadership are driving culture change toward a more data-driven and effective organization. I think the CEO is smart and strong and holds sincere values about transparency, employee engagement and safety.

    Cons

For every effort at culture change, there is backlash and resistance. The middle management level seems very political. There is plenty of work to go around, but the power games and turf wars are exhausting.

    Advice to Management

Culture change needs to happen within the management level. Silos should be broken down vertically as well as laterally. Cultivate and act on genuine respect for the professionals (below management level) and truly empower them to lead. Stop fighting over money and make it work.
