I have been working at Puget Sound Energy

    Pros

Coworkers at an individual contributor level are generally very good. They typically care about making an effort at their job and most aim to have good relationships with their coworkers. There are certain job or projects that are interesting and where you can learn. Pretty decent PTO for the region (maybe not compared to tech companies though).

    Cons

The pay here is very poor and people are stretched thin because the company has a hard time hiring people with such bad pay and opportunities for promotion in an expensive area like this. The management does very little about this in any real way. They are good at being friendly on the surface but many of the actual things they say and certainly actions they take don’t indicate real efforts to improve things for their...

I worked at Puget Sound Energy full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

PSE offers a great work/life balance. I worked with some amazing people. During my time at PSE I learned a great deal. Benefits are good.

    Cons

There is a disconnect between Directors and Managers which trickles down. There are very few good managers in the company. Puppets are promoted into management not leaders. I experienced bullying and sexism from my manager. The company puts out Ethics Videos but does not take the complaints seriously and will do anything not to acknowledge and will only act if there is a legal charge. If you try to find another job within...

I have been working at Puget Sound Energy full-time for less than a year

    Pros

They really treat employees well, and for what we do, the pay is great. Great perks, great opportunity for growth.

    Cons

Having to wait a year before applying elsewhere in the company as a full time customer service rep.

I worked at Puget Sound Energy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

For non union, competitive salary, good benefits and PTO. Annual bonus if the company does well to their benchmarks. Management making concerted effort to provide input with regular 1:1 meetings. Ability to work from home as agreed by the team and managers.

    Cons

Watch out for reviews, even when a mistake is directed by a manager, don't expect them to take responsibility. If someone provides an 'opportunity for improvement' it will be reflected and used against you to reduce your score for bonus and merit raise.

    Advice to Management

You are doing the right things to comply with the laws. The subject matter experts are overloaded and bringing in contract help is only a temporary stop-gap. Consider putting in place a reporting mechanism to report bully managers.

I have been working at Puget Sound Energy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I love everything about this company: The Culture, People, Job. It helps that I have only worked for fast-paced, revenue growth companies my entire career prior to PSE... It’s nice to work for a company that is truely customer and community focused. That is really hard to come by these days.... I compliment PSE for their Cloud initiative. I feel like I am a part of something special... Being able to travel to industry...

    Cons

Too many projects in-flight.. Sometimes I feel like I spread myself thin.

    Advice to Management

Take a step back and evaluate where you collectively envision PSE 10 years from now. Then decide what you want to do today.

I worked at Puget Sound Energy full-time

    Pros

Many excellent, committed people - made some great friends and had many good experiences. Management always seemed to genuinely care about my wellbeing as a person. Very stable; layoffs were rare in recent years. Good work-life balance, and good benefits. Genuinely interesting and fulfilling work - everyone needs electricity! PSE takes their responsibility to provide critical services very seriously at all levels, and...

    Cons

The utility environment is a bit like working for the government - a large bureaucracy that is slow to change, and some extremely unhelpful employees coast along for years just cashing checks. Major projects must be approved by state regulators, which can add months/years or kill initiatives after much work has been done. Employee development framework and mentorship programs are sorely lacking; it's tough to be a younger...

    Advice to Management

Make a more concerted effort to develop and retain future leaders. There are many (very!) well-paying, dynamic and exciting places to work in the Seattle Metro area who will hire away your next generation of leaders if you don't fully commit to developing, mentoring, and engaging your younger employees.
